Plane crash in Basel Stadt

Not much info yet I'm afraid................

http://www.news.ch/Kleinflugzeug+in+...122/detail.htm

The general gist is that a small plane crashed this morning at 11.25am. The destination was Wisconsin and they believe only the pilot was in the aircraft. He is dead and they are searching for any other victims as it crashed near a playground in Roggenburgstrasse.

The title made me think that there had been some huge catastrophic accident at the airport.

Damn, I read about the guy in Aero Revue ... he was on his way to EAA Airventure in Oshkosh, Wisconsin ... world's largest fly-in.

A sad day in aviation.

:(

AIUI he was flying an experimental plane to the US - which I presume means it was full of fuel when it crashed.

I just wonder how an experimental aircraft was allowed to fly over a populated area.....

Cheers,
Nick

Did it say the actual cause of the crash in the article (sorry, me no speaka-da-lingo too good yet...)? Normally they don't let even experimental aircraft fly without an airworthyness inspection.

No reasons for the crash yet, not even speculation. I don't know the Swiss experimental / homebuilt aircraft rules, but would venture a guess that they require one or more inspections before granting an airworthiness certificate.

Experimental / homebuilt aircraft fly over populated areas in the U.S. all the time - after an initial period of a certain number of hours where they can't venture too far from their home base.

Remember, professionals build the Titanic, amateurs built the Ark. :D

The story mentions a fuel system problem which delayed the takeoff from Saturday.

Luckily I'm at work right now. Well, lucky for me, maybe not the rest of you :p

Less than a km from my place though.

I'm in the US on a business trip right now, but heard about this...came in to find out what happened. It is quite close to my apartment, too, just a couple of blocks away.
