This thread is likely to get very ugly, given the atmosphere on the forum over the last couple of days.
Maybe its just me but I find the atmosphere of the forum to be generally one of where the hell did this noob come from and what the hell is this weird problem that they want us to solve? and why did they come here of all places? They couldn't possibly be thinking 'you know, i have this weird problem and I live in Switzerland, but I also have some kind of ability to form English sentences so I think I'll try to find an English speaking forum for this country and ask about my weird problem there'. Then, there's Nil. Again, maybe that's just me.

How is the fact that the victim was foreign any way relevant?
At this time, nothing is clear about the details, and so it is far too early to know whether his Spanish nationality was of relevance

I'm not reading OP's mind, but does the case serve as example to show that unlike in SVP posters, foreigners are not always criminals they are also victims of crimes (?!).
It does not serve of an example of anything as not even the SVP says that foreigners are always the criminals. It does not (yet) serve as an example of anything until it becomes clear by what weapon he was killed . The second point however is subject to change, even if I find it difficult for a women first of all to use an army weapon and second to get the ammunition.

Re: Spaniard killed. Swiss wife arrested.

If I go back and actually read the OP (posted by someone who has made no other posts to this thread, yet) it says to "discuss". Discuss what? There's no discussion in the OP itself.

It's a domestic crime. Wives murder their husbands all the time.

The fact that one of the people in this story happens to be foreign is irrelevant.
Yes, because many of them are subscribers to the journal
"Besser wohnen" ... and take it a bit too literally

just for an update, the thing they now have is far shorter than "our" model and looks like that

if you see it with soldiers now it is almost "cute"
and of course would no longer need as much space at home as the old thing

Re: Spaniard killed. Swiss wife arrested.

Now wait a minute. How the heck did an army assault rifle get into the picture? I thought the article in the Basler Zeitung clearly stated that the way how and the circumstances under which the whole thing happened still are not clear and are being investigated.

The guy got shot, that's all we know about the technicalities. Or, to put it more clearly, that's all the journalist thinks (s)he knows.

Folks, please calm down, ok?

Well, anyone who just states a topic and then follows with Discuss always gets me annoyed.

To be clear about it, that an army rifle was used looks extremely unlikely, on the basis of the available reports.

The old one also, in conjunction with the bayonet, was quite useful for the "Servelat-Brötle"

but neither the "old" one nor the "new" one look likely to have been involved, at least on the basis of what at this stage is available

Re: Spaniard killed. Swiss wife arrested.

News reports contain little information other than someone was murdered and a suspect is arrested. The original post does not raise any question or issue other than the news reports.

Now where's that "Next Thread" link?

Relax. There will be more information tomorrow. Until late afternoon I guess when the Basel authorities will have their press conference. Possibly in very late evening, in order to annoy "diä Zürcher voom Blick vooo Züüüri"

Re: Spaniard killed. Swiss wife arrested.

Cannut, that gave me the idea to post how this case is presented on the Spanish press. This is what I found:

"A Spanish 35, whose identity remains unknown, was killed today in his apartment in the Swiss city of Basel. His wife, a Swiss, 32, was arrested by police after she alert the emergency services.

Suspicions that she is the author of the crime are pretty strong, local police said, declining to give details of what happened or research."
(Google translate, source: http://www.lavanguardia.es/sucesos/2...e-basilea.html)

DB I have been reading the discussions this weekend, I see what you mean with "the atmosphere on the forum over the last couple of days", but I believe that what happened does not forbid to go on following swiss news and commenting them here, same way it has been done with many other press news before this weekend. Why should that change? I used the word words foreigner/Spaniard in the title because these words are also used by the journalists on the media.

I agree in that it is soon to jump into conclusions on this particular case. The idea is to see how it evolves (if anything else is made public, of course). Coming from a country where people does not usually have a gun at home, and living here, I am particularly intrigued about the topic on which role having a gun at home plays in violent or accidental deaths by shootings. Because of this, and being this forum a place with plenty of foreigners, I found that piece of news appropriate to share here.

You see? Thanks to the replies I learned how the military guns look like. Wolli, I thought women can voluntarily take military service...in that case, they are also allowed to keep a gun / buy ammunition, I understand?
