| | Re: It's official: the swiss love mister swiss elections | Quote: | | | | | I'm not saying that secondos aren't real swiss. However, I'm quite certain that most of the people who like mister swiss would not consider these people to be real swiss under different circonstances (See also this thread) | | | | | Why are you quite certain ? Do you have exact knowledge of "what people" "like Mister Switzerland" ? There is no news about Secondos being disliked by people with CH parents.
Admittedly, I cannot tell you who exactly is watching. I am not among them, but according to the SRG, the "viewers quotas" are quite respectable

| | Re: It's official: the swiss love mister swiss elections | Quote: | | | | | While it is obvious that the mister SWITZERLAND elections are popular here, I find your correlation a bit far fetched. I do not think that it is the SVP Stammtisch sitting in their pub watching the elections and vote for the one they consider the best Übermensch.
The Swiss simply love casting shows of all kinds and voting for the most absurd things has a long tradition here. They also love the Eurovision song contest more than most other nations. Plus: They do not really have any entertainment industry - most music, movies and even TV programmes are imported. So you naturally have a shortage of "celebrities". The people and the media therefore have the need to create "Swiss stars" to keep the 20 minutes entertainment page full... | | | | | CH-people love the Song Contest more than most other nations ? In spite of the media stating that the CH-audience for that contest has severely dropped over the years ?
The entertainment industry is well existing, but it is the same then in the neighbouring countries. Entertainment people from CH like Vico Torriani (from Graubünden), Marco Rima, Kurt Felix, Jörg Kachelmann, etc, made a good part of their career in Germany. Another section of the CH-entertainment industry is the SRG (Swiss Radio + TV), also known as the "SRG-Mafia" . The chiefs of the SRG however want to push things like "Miss Switzerland" and "Mister Switzerland" as this is to be most securily a "Swiss affair" |

| | Re: It's official: the swiss love mister swiss elections | Quote: | | | | | A story about mister swiss has appeared every single day for the past month in the swiss papers (and by swiss papers I mean 20min and Blick).
Several points are quite interesting:
- the swiss are (to my knowledge) the only people on earth to actually be interested in a Mister election
- The mister election seems more popular in the german speaking part (which leads me to believe more swiss germans are gay than swiss french or swiss italians?)
- swiss taste in men seems exclusively focused on the mediterranean type
- Most of these "typical" swiss men not only don't look swiss, but usually aren't swiss to begin with (the so called secundos) which I find ironic
Generally speaking, I wonder if there is a link between promoting swiss male beauty and the fact that it is more popular in german part. As you know, the german part leans very much toward the right (with SVP being very popular). Seeking the "perfect" swiss man obviously caters to national pride. But it may go further than that. I don't want to link it directly to nazism, but the idea seems to go in a similar direction ("the perfect male (*cough*race*cough*)"). Isn't it strange that the only place in the world where Mister elections are popular just happens to be SVP-Land? | | | | | This is awesome where can I get an entry form for such an event!

That's the basics: Foreign residents don't have the same rights as nationals. Are you new in the country or what?

| | Re: It's official: the swiss love mister swiss elections | Quote: | | | | | I've always been somewhat amused by the the fascination with both Miss and Mr. Swiss competitions. The run-up, the competition itself and the winners get far more press-coverage and exposure than in any other country I can think of (Miss GB was an exception last year, as she was also a serving soldier, which was deemed newsworthy).
I wonder if it is the lack of many "real" Swiss celebs? You can hardly miss a day without the mention of at least one of the previous half-dozen Misses Swiss in the papers; just today, there was a whole article in 20mins on Christa Rigozzi making her "breakthrough" in Germany. | | | | | Not true, if your main source of informational newspapers is 20min or Blick then that's what they write about, mostly. Gossip, sensationalism etc. Why not read the Tages Anzeiger, Cash or the Neue Zurcher Zeitung for instance? Every country has celebrities but Europeans or the Swiss rather, don't make them their main focus of existence like USA for example. Majority of celebrities in Switzerland have a more balanced view of fame. However, if you want to know them you have to run in their circles like anywhere else.
Did you know that two of the most famous artist in the world Peter Fischli and David Weiss are Swiss? These guys are millionaires ten times over and are world famous. I've met them and you certainly wouldn't be able to pick them out of the crowd. They won't ride up in a limousine. Anyways, step outside of the box a bit, you'd be surprised about the other parts of the culture of Switzerland or Europe in general. Celebrities have a different ring to them than UK for example. |

I write from experience they are well respected.

Since Mister Swiss election is only open to "real" Swiss and that most people here aren't "real" Swiss (yes, you may have obtained citizenship, but that doesnt make you an Eidgenosser as defined by SVP ) lets have a competing election conveniently called Mister EF! Naturally, I vote for myself.
Victory will be mine!

I've been told he mainly entertains women and that not only in Germany.

That might be why, well that IS why! | | | | | Sure, when the Duke of Lombardy in Milano had some "family problems", the three Cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden had the splendid idea to conquer a slice of Lombardia, and keep it |

Mr Kachelmann DID MAKE weather reports "entertainment" ! And so, he may be a good weather forcaster, he may be a womanizer, but he most of all is an entertainer |
