I was cycling up to Altstetten station just before 11pm and there was a major scuffle going on.
The cops were firing tear gas canisters at one section of the fans (probably the Basel lot) and some of those canisters were being picked up and thrown back, along with bottles.
There were at least 150 officers in full riot gear, and two massive water cannon trucks (briefly used).
Wow! Didn't expect that at all.
I didn't feel an urge to take pictures or a video clip of the action because i figured it'll be in the morning papers and news, but I did take one amusing photo of a row of riot officers with one extremely short chap in it.
Reminded me of that famous line... "aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?"
Kash.

We didn't hear a thing. But then we were in the Queens of the Stone Age gig nearby, and they were in the process of blowing the roof off the place. |

Yeah, yeah, a minor issue. But thanks to last night's glorious victory for Basel and the draw for the last three matches, I know where I'd put my money (and it ain't in any Zürich-based bank ...)

It is really interesting especially because the media does not only not report this, but claims the opposite! All newspapers I looked at said "problems before the game, afterwards no issues at all"! They even quote the police who said that bringing the fans back to the trains was easy this time... tear gas and water cannons are not "easy" in my book... http://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/zuerich/...story/25437278
That's why I made this thread: Some tear gas is considered normal when this derby happens. Only when 1500 fans attacked the security at the entrance before the game gets it mentioned.
Idiots. I like football with all the emotions connected to it. I like the choreographies and all the creativity going on in the fan blocks. I even like creative forms of protest, for example when the FCZ fans unscrewed the seats to make their own stands (the stadium is "seats only" which is pretty bad for the atmosphere...). But I really don't see the point in attacking security or police, trashing stadiums, robbing food stands and destroying the bathrooms as happened yesterday... again.

We have dozens of donkeys in Basel.
We also have quite a good head-to-head record against FCZ over the last few years, don't you think? |
