I use it when I'm visiting somewhere new. It's easier to know what you're looking for instead of crawling along looking at house numbers.
If Chritstopher Colombus had googlestreetview he'd have taken the south journey through Cap of good hope instead of going west and discover America. It is only 5 years later that vasco de gama took the south journey.

If they manage to enforce this and Google withdraw the service, the follow on will be all publicly accessible CCTVs will have to be blocked, not to mention that this would also bring into question the legality of using CCTV footage as legal evidence. Does it suddenly become inadmissible because your privacy was invaded by videoing you? All Webcams in all the passes, towns and ski areas etc will have to be turned off, they will have to rewrite all the Photo journalism rules that apply to any proffessional photographer taking a pic in CH, etc etc etc ...

The knock on effect clearly hasnt been considered in any way by the twits that are campaigning against this.

So you were photographed walking down the street, big deal, Chances are someone who knows you walked past you on the same day and saw you walking, so did they invade your privacy because they saw you???
People post far more privacy invading pics on facebook and MySpace without your permission than what Streetview publishes, are you gonna ask Facebook to be banned as well?

All this so called privacy crap and hooha from citizens of a country who quite happily accept that its ok to allow public access the STVA database of license plates and retrieve the address details of License plate holders.

Privacy is a facade in this digital day and age, and especially in CH. The swiss authorities go to extraordinary lengths to know everything they possibly can about you, and they dont try to hide it from you either, yet some twat wants to get upset because he was pictured on a Streetview pic!?!

Gimme a break!!
I'm not sure yet what I think of Google Earth & Street Map.

But, I'm not sure I agree with you at all about the jump from Google Maps Street View to all the CCTV cameras in Switzerland. The public, well, the whole world, does not have access to all those cameras.

Streetview is there to see the streets. Not to see people. It's not so very difficult to take out people from the picture. Time consuming yes. Difficult, no.

Personally, I think this is more of a "territory" issue. Sort of like "Hey, who are you to video all our streets", sort of thing.

IIRC, Argentina had a bit of a scuffle with Google too. They had banned them to do the street map thing. Not sure where it stands now.

I DO have a problem with all the CCTV cameras in the UK. I don't know how they let that happen.
