I cannot understand this! This sex education method is too advance for 4 - 8years olds.

I just think small kids might be a little confused by seeing adult genitalia, especially if it's not part of a complete body. I remember seeing my mom naked and her telling me I'd look like that one day, and it freaked me out I must say. In fact it's one of the few intact memories I have of my childhood. Children learning about their own bodies is one thing, but implanting adult ideas about sexuality into their minds is another and possibly harmful thing. It could interfere with the development of a healthy, individual sexual identity.

Re: Swiss OUTRAGE: Sex Education [Swiss Style]

I came across this article on the net, I think everyone should read it
http://www.spiegel.de/international/...702679,00.html

It would lead to a whole generation with psychological problems. As parents we should not let this education program come into effect. Please read and pass it on so that other parents are aware of this too.

Re: Swiss OUTRAGE: Sex Education [Swiss Style]

I was a bit late to this thread, so thought I'd better start at the very beginning.
I was wondering why there was a picture of a cervelat shoved lengthwise into a Mütschli roll and on the other side, another Mütschli with sliced cervelat and ketchup???

I was immediately concerned with what the kids are doing with their food on the annual
schooltrip

Ok, so you think that a revised sex education will automatically lead to the same questionable results of some left wing extremists in the lat 60s? A school that gave lessons on how to fight with the police and how to become a good communist?

Pleeeease....

Re: Swiss OUTRAGE: Sex Education [Swiss Style]

I was talking to my brother on the phone this morning. He works in a secondary school in Manchester and told me that there is no school nurse anymore ( matron ) for fear of touching the children and I was amazed. How things have changed.
Also, a friend visiting from Britain recently was shocked that our local Kindergarten had no fence around it and just anybody could walk in......

I was shocked to hear that it is ILLEGAL in the UK to let children walk to primary school on their own... where I grew up was it frowned upon if parents brought their kids to school by car - we were supposed to walk that one km a day...

Re: Swiss OUTRAGE: Sex Education [Swiss Style]

You know, bro' also told me that the new kids coming in September are slowly introduced to the school (starting next week) with a special meal in the canteen, mini - lessons etc.

We were shoved onto the rowdy school bus beginning of September with the local hard-knocks and weren't even sure where to get off....!!!!

It's gone mad.......

Well, I'll certainly never look at Swiss pastries the same.

I'm curious what the rate of teen pregnancy is here in Switzerland. I guess something must be being done right, because I don't seem to see many teen mothers here.

I think that is more to do with the Swiss education system and apprenticeship possibilities. There are options for kids here when they leave school.
Although the system gets a lot of flak on EF, I can't help feeling it's rather good. It has served my bilingual daughter very well.

Re: Swiss OUTRAGE: Sex Education [Swiss Style]

Yeah, it seems (to me) that going on to continue one's education is just automatically expected and considered a "must" here... whereas, in the US for example, a lot of kids seem to think it's more of a choice than a necessity.

So I had wondered if maybe that had something to do with the low rate of teen pregnancy here. I was raised in the US and went to a very large high school from 1987 - 1991. I remember the first two years, I hardly saw any pregnant girls there. But by the last two years, it was like an epidemic had broken out.

It's factor 10 (CH vs. USA):
http://www.unicef-irc.org/publicatio.../repcard3e.pdf

Teenage-pregnancies actually do make the headlines here, from time to time.
(If the mother is Swiss...).
http://www.20min.ch/news/bern/story/11617980
http://www.20min.ch/wissen/gesundheit/story/11196940
etc.

I guess, if you have kids early, they are also grown-up early - with all the advantages and disadvantages.
But there are probably as many examples of girls who messed-up their life after they got pregnant as there are of girls who got their act together.

Well, I was not referring to the politics involved on the left front, as a concerned parent I am just worried about any adverse effect on young impressionable minds. The tools involved in explaining the whole concept here dont look very educational or helpful in anyway (toys, messaging and rubbing with sand bags?). I think all this is not very necessary. Just letting the children know what is their personal space would be good enough.

Again: the article reduces a pretty long research and concept into some frankly misleading messages. The journalist wants to spark a reaction instead of actually reporting on something. He clearly manages with you.

To recap: sex education today has been proven to be pretty useless - it comes at an age where the kids know their stuff already. Times are changing and kids can get the worst hardcore pornography easily online. Wasn't possible in my age and yes, that was probably a good thing. Yes, even at that age. Sexual assaults among teenagers have been one of the few areas where crime did in fact go up over the last years.
I think it is the responsibility of the state to look into the matter and come up with a concept. Trashing a concept you apparently did not read about except of a badly written tabloid article on the sex toys is ignorant. Comparing it with some communist nutters from the 68 generation and claiming that the concept you did not inform yourself about thoroughly is going to make all kids psychopaths is plainly stupid.
