Re: Mr Joseph Sepp Bellend Blatter - FIFA corruption

The information in this link is very interesting indeed.

"On 18 November 2014, FIFA had filed criminal charges against persons unknown with the OAG. Therefore, the Swiss proceeding is aimed at persons unknown, with FIFA as the injured party. With this procedure, the OAG is contributing to the struggle against corrupt behaviour and money laundering."

If FIFA can claim that it provided documents that set these arrests into motion, it means an internal plan to blame it on executive committee members, shield Blatter and look like that FIFA is actively engaged in internal housecleaning to keep sponsors on board started more than six months ago. If borne out, I am deeply impressed by the depths Sepp Blatter can sink to.

It find it inconceivable that so much corruption exists within the FIFA without Blatter being part of the problem. The fact that these guys, being employed by a club that's supposedly not-for-profit, were residing in the Baur au Lac, AFAIK the best hotel in Zurich, instead of a non-luxury hotel says it all.
That's how they stay not-for-profit. Like American colleges and sports. No profit allowed means spending all you can on luxuries like huge wages, beanos and unnecessary infrastructure. YAY!

Precisely but if we look at Blatter's teflon history, can't come as a big surprise

I would think they would be more interested in the gold and the power than Seph, lest he resists and gets in their way. He's done his role in building it up.

I think I've watched too many intrigue movies. Interesting though. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the story.

Re: Mr Joseph Sepp Bellend Blatter - FIFA corruption

From the Grauniad website linked to earlier, I like this bit:
Among the arrests, as a side-note:
— Owen Gibson (@owen_g) May 27, 2015 As @kemenzerem points out Concacaf president Jeffrey Webb is head of Fifa's internal audit committee.
Webb was re-elected unopposed at last month’s Concacaf congress, attended by Blatter.
Now there's oversight for you!

Here's a different take on it

The arrested officials will be extradited to the United States, where they will receive a fair and unbiased trial because nobody there gives the tiniest shit about football.

Who actually votes for the FIFA president, and if there are key members missing does it impact the validity?

England are now the bookies favourites to host the 2018 World Cup

Quote:
Bookmakers have been quick to issue odds on who might replace either of those countries, with England installed as the favourites for the tournament in three years time should Russia lose the hosting rights.

Russian Foreign ministry has issued a statement saying " the US acted illegally. US should stop applying its legal standards outside its borders and instead should follow standard international procedures"; which procedures they do not specify.....
No complaint about Switzerland so far.

Reminds me of that song "It takes a worried man to sing a worried song" - 'Worried Man Blues' by Woody Guthrie!!

Tell that to the Ukraine
You mean "Russia has opened a criminal case on an American band after one of its members stuffed the Russian flag into his pants, pulled it out his backside and whipped it between his legs, state-run news agency RIA Novosti reported Monday.

A musician told the audience "Don't tell Putin" and then tossed the flag into the audience at a concert in Odessa, Ukraine.
"

Or

"Law enforcement officers in Russia have launched a criminal probe into the actions of a Ukrainian political commentator who reportedly called on the pro-Kiev military to “thoroughly exterminate” Russian journalists."

Or

"Authorities in Moscow said they are investigating whether Russian children adopted by American families were illegally trafficked in the United States
Russia's Investigative Committee said in a statement that it would investigate whether any of the cases violated Russian's human trafficking laws
"

The crimes for the arrests were committed in the US, using US banks for funnelling money. This is why the Swiss got involved in the arrests. We know Russia has an estranged relationship with legality.

Re: Mr Joseph Sepp Bellend Blatter - FIFA corruption

Never mind the corruption and bribery scandal. Qatar won the right to host the World Cup on promises that the games would be held in air-conditioned stadia so that the games could be held in the Northern Hemisphere summer. Every Southern Hemisphere host, including most recently Brasil, has had to host the games during their winter. Now, despite the chaos that will result in rescheduling the World Cup during the northern winter, FIFA is saying that change is absolutely impossible? Even if you want to exclude the United States which can easily host the even in large (American) football stadia that do not have to built, there's enough time for OTHER countries to build stadia and get ready. THAT is what I cannot accept.

As disappointed as England was to lose the event, Russia can host the World Cup. Barring a new Ice Age, Qatar can't. That should be the issue. That it isn't is testimony to FIFA's arrogance. If Martians paid Blatter enough money, he'd put the World Cup on the moon, and then say the site can't be changed if rockets can't be built in time.

Re: Mr Joseph Sepp Bellend Blatter - FIFA corruption

Uefa have called for FIFA to suspend the presidential vote tomorrow. Uefa are obviously united in their opposition to Blatter, I don't see why they shouldn't go one step further and suspend their membership of FIFA. FIFA and a World Cup without Europe would have no appeal to fans whatsoever. Meanwhile Uefa could easily survive and even prosper.
