Champagne time!!!
I must say that I am impressed by the clever way the investigating agencies concealed their cards like how much they actually know and who was cooperating and for how long.

There is an old saying "give a man enough rope and he will hang himself!"

Seems to have worked this time!!

He must have learned that the FBI or someone else had dirt on him that's going to be released imminently.

Re: Mr Joseph Sepp Bellend Blatter - FIFA corruption

The Compliance guy arranging the clean up, Domenico Scala, seemed to say that due to FIFA rules and to allow for Presidential campaigns to get going before an extraordinary congress, the election will take place between December this year and March next year.
That might allow Blatter just sufficient time for all that shredding. or maybe a face lift to run under another guise or buy his own island with no extradition agreements with the USA?
Any other good suggestions how Blatter could best use the following 7+ months?

More FIFA waste with the cost of another unnecessary congress (that could have been avoided if Blatter had retired at a normal age) with private jets, hotels, brown envelopes and hookers etc etc.

But Domenico Scala's action items did seem sensible (while DeGregorio's face afterwards seemed full of anger).

Re: Mr Joseph Sepp Bellend Blatter - FIFA corruption

While I don't really know enough about FIFA and football compared to some of the other commentators in this thread, I suspect that it was explained to him after the vote that his position within FIFA, given the situaton, was untenable and that he had two choices:-

1. Go gracefully

2. Be removed unceremoniously via the public back door.

Sensibly for him he appears to have choosen the former.

Of course what has come to light today is likely to be playing a rather large role in this decision.

Great news but who is going to clean out the stables? Who still has enough credibility and clean hands in FIFA to get the job done?

Speculation, but maybe UEFA finally found its balls, a credible boycott threat was in the making.

really sad news for those readers who supported him....
it seems that Blatter himself couldn't support himself. He brought shame on Switzerland because he represented the arrogant and corrupted side of some of the Swiss people

If he had decided not to run four days ago his opponent would be the president today.

This way he gets to control what happens all the way to the election to replace him. I cant help but wonder if this was a backup plan in case UEFA or major sponsors decided they could not work with him anymore. The man is power mad, and this way he gets to leave his imprint behind instead of a fresh start without him

I expect a lot of rumors about what happened behind the scenes to fly about in the next weeks.

One of the reporters from The New York Times was on TV yesterday. He said that Blatter was expected to be interviewed imminently, probably under arrest.

I don't know if it has already been mentioned but the news article mentioned that the reason the officials were arrested in Zurich was that it would be easier to extradite them all from one place, not particularly to disrupt the FIFA meeting

I assume they made all the arrests at the same time to avoid the risk of people fleeing. These people seem to travel a lot so knowing they would all be in the same hotel in Zürich would also be an important factor!

I imagine it would be easier, and more certain, to extradite the criminals from Zurich to the USA, than from other countries where there is no treaty,

Countries (light blue) with which the US (purple) has an extradition treaty

so there are quite a few countries where millionaires are safe from US justice.

However, "Switzerland reserves the right to refuse to extradite its own nationals".
