Russian Sport's minister Vitaly Mutko:
  • was responsible for overseeing the Soviet era style doping test labs.
  • issued direct orders to “manipulate particular samples”.
  • is a FIFA executive committee member.
  • is now under investigation by FIFA (whatever that entails is anybody's guess these days).
  • and headed Russia’s successful 2018 World Cup bid, during which he suggested English football is corrupt.

The head of Russia's anti-doping laboratory has resigned, hours after it was stripped of its right to test samples.
A World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) commission had called for a life ban for lab director Grigory Rodchenkov.

Athletics governing body suspends Russia from all competitions. That was a quick decision by the IAAF!

Now to see what FIFA have to say about the Russians!

Re: Mr Joseph Sepp Bellend Blatter - FIFA corruption

Fifa’s ethics committee has concluded investigations into suspended president Sepp Blatter and Uefa president Michel Platini and is understood to be seeking lengthy bans for the pair.

It is understood this request will be for bans of several years based on four potential ethics code breaches: mismanagement, conflict of interest, false accounting and non co-operation with or criticising the ethics committee.

So Sepp is 79 and has got away with it for 14 years after the normal retirement age. He's got a new girlfriend (someone else's wife). Lucky Furka. And he will probably still be allowed to unofficially run his vanity project of the FIFA World football museum. He will be looked after by the FIFA family.
Platini is 60 and so I think it's great that a person as slimey as him will be prevented from heading FIFA.
But the other candidates are also awful. I despair. Nothing will change.

I understand your despair, but at least from now on they know that they are not invulnerable. Bletter's clan believed, legitimately, that they could do whatever they wished. I presume that handing each other a million or two for no obvious reason will stop. Tiny steps...

Re: Mr Joseph Sepp Bellend Blatter - FIFA corruption

Saint Sepp will hopefully be on TV soon to explain how close he came to death with all his recent woes. Poor guy.
I thought the Swiss Martyrs were protestant. So as a Catholic he will be breaking new ground.
He says he felt between the angels in heaven and the devils who set fire to his world. Maybe it was the sedatives he was on.
Please light a candle for Martyr Blatter the patron saint of brown envelopes and blinkers. Let's hope he makes it through....
....if only to face prosecution.

Good question. Some of my younger colleagues say he is a joke. But I think older Swiss my be bit embarrassembarrassed as he heads a world eorganisation that they are proud of.

I think he is simply an older Swiss businessman who was still doing deals the old fashioned way that Swiss business was carried out between Swiss firms right up to not so many decades/years ago.

But that is just my conjecture.

My Swiss friends see Blatter as someone from haute valais / hoch Wallis. A specific breed of Swiss. The kind you also find in Zermatt

Seb Coe is such a crony just like Blatter and David Cameron. Sticking up for all the old boy network in professional situations and allowing friendships to influence the way he deals with those close to him.
Ridiculous in such a public role.
These errors of judgement reoccur because there is no one next to these men who are brave enough to tell it to them like it really is.

His interviews tonight on BBC, ITV and Channel 4 UK channels left me very underwhelmed and as VP for 7 years he must have poor connections not to have picked up on rumours. I think he should fall on his sword now to save face, but he'd just be replaced by another part of the furniture.
Hmm

Some funny Seb Coe Anagrams attached (I don't think 'Dick Pound' needs any anagrams ;-) ).
Seems he now has his own problems!

Sebastian Coe gave up his role Thursday as a special adviser to Nike Inc. that had left the new president of the IAAF open to accusations that he was vulnerable to conflicts of interest.

Many think that Blatter has the power to bring down the whole of FIFA. Would he apply the scorched earth policy? If I go everyone goes....

Re: Mr Joseph Sepp Bellend Blatter - FIFA corruption

Rebuilding FIFA will take years either way. Problems are not limited to FIFA but also the confederations and maybe also the contracts and governance with the national associations.

First we will have to wait what these criminal investigations will bring which will take a lot of time as well. In the meantime preparations for the Worldcup continue.

One big difference between Sepp and Seb is that whilst Blatter claims that his modest salary (which I think he hinted was approx 1 million CHF per year - and I think is not exorbitant for a competent leader of a world-wide organisation these days) he is not even in the top 3,000 wealthiest people in Switzerland, whereas I believe Seb Coe's job has no official salary (but it must pay more than generous expenses). So Seb's Nike salary must have helped. But Seb has had so many fingers in so many pies ever since his days as an elected UK Conservative politician. UK MPs have a terrible reputation for topping up salaries with expenses.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/news...cover-ups.html
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...-went-far.html

But both organisations still address their heads as 'Mister President'. Although it is not a criminal offence I think it shows that these organisations are stuffed full of old fuddy duddies and need to be dragged into the 21st century (or in my opinion FIFA needs to be replaced rather than reformed.).

iaaf website does not include financial statements nor salaries. though the salaries are not the reason why FIFA and IAAF are in trouble I believe.

Re: Mr Joseph Sepp Bellend Blatter - FIFA corruption

Sebastian Coe is due to give evidence today to the British House of Commons Culture Media and Sport committee investigating doping in British athletics. I think he is going to be asked what he knew about doping in the UK. Although questioning is often rugged in these committees I doubt he will admit much. As he was Vice President of IAAF I am sure he will say he was too high up in the sport to know anything. It also might get largely ignored (if indeed it doesn't get postponed) due to the entire day's debate into possible UK air bombing in Syria.

Coincidentally today is the five year anniversary of England losing the bid to host the 2018 World Cup. At the time Andy Anderson, England's bid's chief executive, said he was surprised and that FiFA's bid review process sbould be looked at, as it seemed the teams with the best technical reviews feedback went out early and the teams with the toughest reviews seemed to have won.

Coe just said, "I don't understand this culture."

He's also said "I don't know." several quite a few times. But the questioning is quite cosy and not particularly demanding.

Step aside buddy.
