Re: Mr Joseph Sepp Bellend Blatter - FIFA corruption

According to Blick the arrested included Alfredo Hawit, Präsident CONCACAF. and Juan Ángel Napout, Präsident CONMEBOL.
The arrests took place in the Bau au Lac hotel again; you would think FIFA people would start avoiding this hotel?

Blatter and Patini were not arrested!

Not a big deal. With a bit of cleanup on their part, they will pull off another soccer event and importantly the WC2018

The two arrested today are based on extradition warrants from the USA, why couldn't Europe do that?

Re: Mr Joseph Sepp Bellend Blatter - FIFA corruption

They are all over to discuss FIFA reforms today:
http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/34994402

And it seems while they (FIFA's reform committee and its chairman Francois Carrard) were originally set to reject internal auditor Domenico Scala's proposed reforms, it seems the FIFA voters are now expected to perform a U-Turn and accept these changes.
http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/34981450

There don't seem to be many citations of sources in those BBC articles, but all the rumours obviously point to a power struggle between old guard and reformers. I would have thought that the existing cronies would have given up after all the latest arrests, ructions and scandals.
Let's see later today if it pans out.

If changes are rejected I hope some football associations make plans to leave FIFA if February's new president is part of the old guard. But as I said before, none of the candidates shine out to me as unblemished, altruistic, beacons of hope.

Re: Mr Joseph Sepp Bellend Blatter - FIFA corruption

it's all a question of terminology -

Fifa is not corrupt. We have individuals that have shown negative behaviour. "

and turning to fifa's strengths -

“There are lots of people in Fifa for more than 20 or 30 years that have not been accused of anything.”

Re: Mr Joseph Sepp Bellend Blatter - FIFA corruption

U.S. authorities keep finding more unceremonious ways to arrest top soccer executives from around the world.

Hector Trujillo, general secretary of Guatemala's soccer federation and a judge on the country's constitutional court, was hauled off a cruise ship at 6 a.m. ET Friday, to face criminal bribery charges.

Here in Switzerland the Gasthof Hirschen posted a spoof advert in Facebook saying guests were safe from police arrest. Several guests wrote complaint comments.

Re: Mr Joseph Sepp Bellend Blatter - FIFA corruption

From today's Guardian "Sepp Blatter investigated by FBI over ISL bribes after Havelange letter" here.

As mentioned in the article, bribery was not a crime in Switzerland before 2004

So the Swiss prosecutor is trying to link the ISL affair with the current investigation. It would mean a much stronger case for them and bad news for Joseph. Why did Havelange write this letter? Did he clear himself or his then son in law with it?

I don't want to defend FIFA's choice for Russia to host the 2018 cup, but if you ignore who's in charge of Russia, there's no reason to believe that Russia can't organise the event properly---just like the Moscow and Sochi Olympics---and the only downside will be the price tag that Russian taxpayers will pay. (Of course, I'm assuming that this time the Games won't be used as cover to launch an invasion of one of Russia's neighbours that used to be part of the USSR.) Furthermore, they'll be played WHEN the World Cup is supposed to be played.

Qatar on the other hand...

Re: Mr Joseph Sepp Bellend Blatter - FIFA corruption

According to the FT today
JPMorgan, along with Bank of America, Citigroup, Credit Suisse, HSBC, Standard Chartered and UBS are among the banks that are holding private discussions with US prosecutors as part of the Fifa probe.

If these banks failed to report any suspicious activities (if there were suspicious activities) then they could be facing billion dollar fines

Re: Mr Joseph Sepp Bellend Blatter - FIFA corruption

The SVP magazine Weltwoche has nominated Blatter as "Swiss of the year". Some times I forget we live in the country best known for tax evasion

Below is a picture of the cover.

Next year could be Mörgeli

Isn't that a shame. Blatter and Platini guilty of "ethics breaches" and banned for 8 years.
