| | 15 yr old makes a Facebook comment, loses job...
Given the nature of EF, I am seriously surprised that nobody made a thread yet, this is the main discussion among Swiss and in the media since yesterday:
A 15 yr old girl is in her last year of Realschule and was supposed to start a apprenticeship at her Gemeinde in Freienbach this September. Based on some not so nice facebook comments the girl wrote on her facebook account - on the size of the behind of one of her teachers - did her parents get an invite to the future employer: The Gemeinde decided that they could not trust her and cancelled the apprenticeship contract!
When I was 15, we did not use the Internet yet. I was in Gymnasium in a very rural and many ways "protected" environment: Not much violence or in other ways many issues besides maybe alcohol abuse. Still: We wrote way worse things into each others notebooks and the like. Basically the manual version of facebook. Once a girl got her notebook confiscated and into trouble for some of the stuff in it, but there is no way that somebody would lose a job based on that! http://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/zuerich/...story/24350950 http://www.20min.ch/news/kreuz_und_quer/story/18363739
Facebook, AFAIK is a typically closed network. I cannot simply google the name and see all the posts of the girl. So in short: Somebody rat on her - and the articles mention that it was possibly the older apprentices who didn't like her...

Your FB profle can be visible to anyone else on FB depending on your security settings and many employers are now doing FB searches of emplyees as part of the hiring routine. | Quote: | | | | | Given the nature of EF, I am seriously surprised that nobody made a thread yet, this is the main discussion among Swiss and in the media since yesterday:

Nope. Facebook as a topic in relation to jobs has never been discussed before on EF... |

A while ago, I came across a website which was able to extract all non-secured data from FB users.
I cannot find the link now, but at that time I tried it and it pulled out quite a lot of info.
Be very careful about your Security settings on FB.
You never know.

She didn't talk bad about her job, colleagues or leaked anything... she just behaved like a normal teenager.

My ex-boss (big Swiss company) admitted that he would always search Facebook & co. for future employees to see what they're like in their free time...
I recently got added by my mother's godchild on FB, a girl of now 13 or 14 years, and was shocked by the kind of commments they leave on each others pictures.
"Think you're pretty you slut? You're such a victim, nobody likes you."
Every second word is victim (Opfer), seems very fashionable that Balkan-slang... not to mention the spelling.
She's apparently not very good at school, loads of kids with migrant backgrounds in her school, and they all write as if none of their mother languages were (Swiss-) German, even tho they're either Swiss or 2nd/3rd generation migrants.. they all talk like that too, horrible. | This user would like to thank simon_ch for this useful post:

Not that terribly bad IMHO.

But kids that age do get a vigorous training about PC privacy, respectful behavior and safety. And not only once, but it is drilled, at least here. I think it is very useful. School computers are often set to run these rules with pictures as a wall paper to remind students how important it is to follow. I think it is a genius idea.
If cantonal institution finds out somebody who is hired as an employee (apprentie is considered this and treated as such, with a lighter work load and more supervision and training) exposing others online, I think they have to follow through with the rules.
To make disparaging comments about teachers these days when kids are linked through FB and often entire classes are, with teachers, etc. the the student is going to pay for this. To draw on a desk, to make some comments in one notebook is a completely different scenario, since the exposure and embarrassment is minimal. Internet is a public medium, if that comment is visible to public, canton is going to make sure they will protect their employee from another employee. I actually think it is a good thing that person got a lesson on online bullying. Earlier it happens, more media writes about it, better for kids, they will be careful.

Not that terribly bad IMHO. | | | | | I find that this FB thing makes everyone loose humour in school environment. It's not so terrible what she wrote. It's the teacher that has some complex with own big ass.
If the teacher had some humour and wit, he/she could have suggested to check instead if the student's head fits in this dunce's cap. | The following 2 users would like to thank MrVertigo for this useful post:

I don't find it humorous at all, and not because I teach myself. I would have hated to read that about colleagues, friends or students. In fact, kids are not let making disrespectful comments about eachother and profs in the class at all, nor on school ground. If they want to do it outside of the class, then they are entirely responsible for what happens afterwards. I say, real life will teach you about respect more than some lecturing, but real also means you might be treated harsher than at school, which is still a training ground.

It was the teacher/the school who informed the future employer... and who then in turn cancelled her contract.
