The Cuckoo clock was invented from scratch btw lol
The joke is a bit dated and the Baden-Württembergers will not love you, robbing them of one of their best inventions. They already lost a good part of the business to traders in and around Zürich and now you go as far as to rob them of their invention

1. You're too quick in writing off the banking sector in CH. UBS's assets alone are 3x the size of the Swiss economy.

2. Switzerland's most important export is the CHF. Investors & central bankers around the world love it for its soundness whereas $ & € are crap.

3. Swiss can't mass produce because their labour costs are too high. Instead, they focus on high quality products which need innovation to remain competitive.

4. CH #1 is what I personally cannot swallow not that its not innovative; Sweden listed as #2 discredits the entire list.

Most of all, Silicon Valley is NOT in Europe, so that the saying "Silicon Valley and the rest of Europe" looks a bit strange

A) the assets of UBS are PART of the Swiss economy
B) the banking sector has lots of money, but as "money earner" for the economy in general is not as important as you put it, as lots of the money they administrate is NOT CH-owned
C) no, the CHF is NOT an export article. CHF purchased abroad at present rather put the country into trouble. And the demand for it in reality have lead to what is to be called a "Franken-Krise"
D) Switzerland cannot mass-produce as its facilities, its factories and its resources are too small. This is what Russian Emperor Alexander I told the Swiss already in 1815 in Vienna, suggesting Switzerland to get a nice slice of Burgundy and the Valtellina (imagine what the CH wine industry would be like ! )
E) You mention Sweden being on position 2 . But the number of patents and the quality of the patents is not necessarily the same.

I mean, how many things can you invent that you want to market only and exclusively in Switzerland? And what could that be? Maybe a new valve for a Schwyzerörgeli?

Seriously, though, there are some things that are patented only (or mainly) in Switzerland - some watch-makers (and not just Swiss ones) files patents only (or mainly) in Switzerland. It's called tactical patenting. Why spend hundreds of thousands on a patent in lots of countries when you can effectively block your main competitors with one Swiss patent at a cost of a few thousand?

Thanks. I understand that, but watchmaking is one of very few industrial fields where that works. It's not the norm, and I'm fairly sure it affects patent statistics only marginally. Most patents applied for by Swiss individuals and companies still must go through the innovation and inventiveness assessment in many other countries, whereas an American design patent for a totally irrelevant new shape of a pop bottle most likely still is counted as a patent.

But some inventions dont even have patents. If they have patents then they have to admit how the system works...... As much hooting an hollering as I hear in this thread about Swiss inventions I doubt DARPA has any shortage of new inventions every year that dwarf whats created in most other parts of the world, and none of the DARPA stuff has patents......

As far as people groaning about Silicon Valley? If they are not that great then why are the majority of VC funds located there????? Inventions that have potential to make money attract investment.

Per capita!
What Jern said is this: patents per capita means that those patents filed by foreign companies operating in CH count as Swiss innovations/inventions & likewise elsewhere.

It depends on the actual clock inside and the shop. But generally not really expensive

You CLEARLY have NO clue.

Tom
If I have no clue then why does the US have 140x the patents PER CAPITA than Switzerland? See chart attached. courtesy of the World Bank.... Switzerland just beat out Kazakhstan.
