I just love his grim sarcasm: it’s a good antidote for my my over-enthusiasm.
Nah. No need for any antidotes to "over-enthusiasm". It wins hands down in my book. Keep it up!

Kloten = Olten. I tend to agree.

I'm sorry, but it seems a bit silly to me to be arguing over something so subjective as to whether or not a city is boring...

But I do *personally* think that the fact that Lost Inbroad DOES live in Kloten makes his argument all the more 'valid' on his side, because one would think that, coming from an area like Kloten, that he would find Zurich to be lively and exciting (which he does not).
Carrie, LiB lives in Olten, not Kloten. Kloten is a year-round amusement park compared to Olten. What some posters try to convey (of course with a huge ladle of salt) is the notion that living in Olten inevitably makes you lose all joy of life, changing your entire perception of reality.

*Makes mental note that Olten = Azkaban*

Maybe, but Kloten is just an outer suburb of Zürich, and out of Kloten you get to the HB within 15 minutes. Go by train out of Olten for 15 minutes and you are in places like Langenthal and Oberbipp

Re: So this is Zürich

I find Kloten's 3 runway airport facility with terminals, underground railways, shopping facilities and lack of being in Solothurn to be vastly superior to Olten's covered bridge and easy access to the "schöne blaue Aare".

Now write an essay discussing the merits of two completely unrelated cities to complete your geography thesis before supper and getting sent to bed early.

Clearly another grey day keeping EFers in front of their screens on a Sunday afternoon.

True. But unlike Kloten which is just an outsized village and outer suburb of Zürich, Olten would have the potential to be a town of relevance, but in reality still is the small backyard-town of a big rail-station with the most beautiful landmark still being

This article is utter nonsense. Zurich is one of the most boring cities in Europe and rightfully so. The most vibrant thing is the airport on a Sunday as everything else is closed...just because a few yuppies end uup at some lido (because there is not really anything else to do) doesn`t mean that the place is all the sudden happening.

You are right the airport is very vibrant on Sunday , i enjoyed today the open terrace to see planes take off and landing , it was just for 2 CHF !

I last time intransit in Olten made a "walkround" but on return to the railstation concluded that the Bahnhof-Buffet is still the best thing of the town, not least with the nice girls working there They however might oppose guests bringing the liqueur with them Their wines however are quite good. That the Migros of Olten-Station sells good wines and cheap beer is interesting

Hair of the dog, would you like another one to keep the warm feeling?
I got about 10 groans when I first joined, because I expressed concern about some local workers>

Re: So this is Zürich

When you say Zurich is vibrant this is true.

However, a valid opinion is from someone who has been in Portugal, Spain, Ibiza, Caribbean, South America, Germany and Switzerland.

What makes Zurich boring for me is not the facilities (bars are a lot, lakes, etc) but the people.

You go dancing and people doesn´t dance happily like latin.
They are always looking like flirting.

When have you seen people dancing lambada ou dancing like dirty dancing?

And i do not mean one person, i mean everybody and not drinking.

When you see ppl not drinking but playing cards, eating ham, and whatsoever here?

Here in Zurich i see people with money always complaining.

THAT IS BORING.

You go to Brasil, Argentina and people is so happy with nothing.

It is good to know many places so we can comment. Here you can see how ppl can be boring having money. I never thought it was possible.

Re: So this is Zürich

Never been to Olten, but it looks fantastic, if you like that sort of thing.

The point was not to compare, contrast or slag off, but to see the place I inhabit through external eyes.

Today I watched a small BBC video about Porto, a city I lived in and loved for four years. An appalling piece of shallow reportage, but the opinion of the film-maker interested me. I've lived in Nigeria, Dubai, Hong Kong and even Wales. I'll never lose my curiosity about other people's experiences. After living in London for far too long, I still seek stories to reinforce why I left. I'm rarely disappointed.

What tickles me most is how territorial, provincial attitudes seem almost as aggressive in the expat community as in the valleys of Kanton Appenzell.

Can we settle this via a mud-Schwingen? I'll get the lederhosen, you bring the earrings.

I can't stand Olten...and I can't stand Switzerland for that matter...but I never asked anybody to compare Zurich with Olten. Zurich would win handsdown..but in comparesence with other cities, be it equal in population size or in reputation, Zurich would fair off as a total $hithole with a complete lack of infrastructure, grubby feel and people's attitudes that matches the city's landscape (grey and unwelcoming). There, there....you can tell em I said it!
