everything I need every available right at my doorstep right away. Nature is quite the bore now.
I prefer nature.

If I need something I can't get at the Denner on my 8 minute walk home from work, there's always Internet, or hop on one of my bikes, or (God forbid) the car and ride 10 minutes to Lugano, or 20 minutes to Italy!

I know teenage drinking goes on everywhere, but maybe in the US it's more done behind closed doors
That's because there it's illegal to do it in public in the US, and here it's not.

Re: What do YOU think about where you live ???

I must say the 'gangstas' here don't bother me as they once did. Learning a bit of Swiss German helps (if you listen in, often as not they are talking about homework or weekend plans!) and so does learning to read body language a little better. I'm seeing a lot of 'aggressive-teenager' posturing copied from rap and hip-hop music videos, but very little actual aggression. Basically it's just teenagers, fooling around with their friends as teenagers do everywhere, pretending to be hard cases because that's what's fashionable.

You watch, give them a cheery Gruezi mitenand as you walk past and you'll get a chorus of Gruezis right back. Or you will in our village anyway.

Re: What do YOU think about where you live ???

I have to say, I feel very privileged to be living in Fribourg. In fact, I'm probably quite defensive about it when people say it's "boring". I love the fact I can be in the mountains or at the lake in 20 minutes, or I can walk out of my appartment and be in the middle of the countryside within a matter of minutes. There are also plenty of forests on my doorstep for my biking. They say the Fribourgeois are country bumpkin types, but I've never seen it like that. They are fiercely proud of their canton, especially when the criticism comes from the big, bad next door neighbour, Bern.
Then again, I am a country boy at heart.

Get oooorrrrrrffffff moi laaaaaand!!!!!!!!!!!
Ye buggers, ye.

I agree, the kids here are harmless. Take Openair Frauenfeld for example. You could not pull that off in North America year after year with minimal issues.
They like to look and act tough, but they're copying what they see on the TV.

I think cantons are quite diverse, though (they're so large)...
Large?

Compared to US states, only GR, BE, VS, VD, and TI are larger than Rhode Island, and only GR, BE, and VS are larger than Delaware!

Re: What do YOU think about where you live ???

It seems that many people around here like the weather. After living in places where temperatures are pretty much ultra hot in the summer and beyond freezing in the winter, I must admit I truly miss an actual summer. I'm talking temperatures of over 30, sun pretty much every day, just being all around hot and not having to wear fall clothes in the summer!
So for me personally, Switzerland is really not the ideal place to live temperature-wise. Then again, I was always a sun and sea type of girl.

Other than that, I really cannot complain! It took a little while, but I'm finally learning to enjoy Zurich.

So move to Ticino!

I wear shorts to work July/August (and some years, June as well)

Especially with all the shootings going on. Someone is likely to show up, pissed off with their loved one and shoot up about 10 people for good measure. Good Ole' USA...

I miss "real" Summer to, although I'm assured by my husband that the cool weather we've been having is not the norm, and also it should heat up in August.

Re: What do YOU think about where you live ???

I love where I live. Finally in a great building with great neighbors with convenient access to transportation and grocery shopping. I'm pretty sure the "cafe" across the street, though, is actually a front for the Turkish mafia.

Re: What do YOU think about where you live ???

I know I'm late to the party, but I think it's an awful piece of cheap journalism to be perfectly honest.

There is no way of judging "happiness". You can be in a positive state of mind in downtown Mogadishu if you just so happen to have taken delivery of a new Toyota pick up fitted up with twin machine guns and a miserable merchant banker in Zürich on a 100 F degree day if you just lost your bank gazillions by messing up a transaction.

I think that one has to find one's true balance and accept that we are the only ones that influence how we truly act and react to our surroundings to determine if geography is that much of a critical factor. I think I'd be happy living under the approach path to Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, even though I find Las Vegas to be a human cesspit of neon and tackiness.

Mini water cannon or cleaning device depending upon which end of the nozzle that you happen to find yourself.

This reminds me that a few months back I was walking down our hill when a group of preteen boys came past in the opposite direction loudly singing the theme tune from the Teletubbies, with every appearance of enjoyment.

So yeah, I love our area.

Re: What do YOU think about where you live ???

I have generally found kids to be very friendly here in Switzerland.

I like Basel so far because it is friendly, I am most likley going to have a nice place to live on the river, it is convenient, peaceful and only short distances before you are in nature! Woot. That is my first week's experience so no stone throwing yet.
