| | Re: Swiss Men are "Mummies Boys" according to today's Times | Quote: | | | | | It's true - Migros was indeed founded by Gottlied Tut't'Weiler (lit. Shagging God Tut the Whaler), having realised that the salad days of laying and whaling were probably gone forever; he opted for a career switch that was, to be fair, only a few centuries behind the vanguard of the cooperative movement (which is, I'm sure you'll agree, p-r-e-t-t-y contemporary by Swiss standards ).
As would be expected of any good Yorkshireman, Tut't'weiler (as he continued to be known, despite the ongoing and conspicuous lack of whales on offer from his outlets) milked it for all it was worth, finally dumping what was left of it on his own customers (smack in the middle of WWII, and for reasons that we can only guess at).
About this time, he also founded a political party (the LDU) which, to be fair, wasn't initially a great success (despite having an authoritarion style of leadership, very in vogue in much of the rest of early '40s Europe); but then Tut cunningly realised he could double his party's share of the vote virtually overnight. By popping his clogs. So he did.
And it came to pass that in Rüschlikon in 1962, Tut the Whaler ran down the curtains (conveniently available in many colours, textures and sizes at all M3 stores, curtains hooks not included) and joined the Choir Invisible (having first taken lessons at Klubschule). This turned out to be an experience shared by most who have visited there (Rüschlikon, that is, not an M3 Migros), however extended or brief their visit. The Scanning Tunnelling Microscope was invented in Rüschlikon, tho' post-cold-war history tells us that the "scanning" and "microscope" bits were only there to distract the guards; and anyone who has had to endure a slumbinar at Swiss Re's Centre for Global Monologues will confirm that Coleridge was clearly trapped there when he wrote the Rime of the Ancient Reinsurer: Day after day, day after day,
We stuck, nor breath nor motion;
As idle as a painted ship
Upon a painted ocean. Anyway, despite its exorbitant prices, today's Migros itself has gone from strength to strength - managing somehow being a cooperative, yet somehow being ruled without any reference to or having consideration of its members(=owners) by its executive board - and thus making now-broke UBS shareholders feel very at home amongst its shelves, though of course they are no longer rich enough to actually shop there themselves.
I myself managed to buy some vegetables there last year that hadn't rotted before I got out the door - my heartiest thanks and appreciation to Mr. Martin Baker and his colleagues for making that experience possible. | | | | | He WAS and IS known as TUTTI ! Nobody cared about Gottlieb Duttweiler. And the park he left is the Tutti-Park. And there of course is the Tutti-Brugg. That the leftwing dominated city government wants to change the name of the bridge is a shame |

I don't know why relating anyone to Egyptian pharaohs would be an insult, i would think of it more as an honor | Quote: | | | | | Had to chuckle at the headline in today's Times:
"Swiss men like to see themselves as rugged Alpine warriors who need to carry large pen knives.
However, a team of geneticists have discovered that many of them are mummies boys, with 50 per cent of Swiss male citizens related to the Pharaoh Tutankhamun.
Gene mapping researchers extracted DNA from the mummified remains of the Pharaoh, who ruled Egypt 3000 years ago, and measured it against modern Swiss man.
They discovered that half of the male population of the nation carried the blood of the Boy King in their veins."
The article goes on to point out that Tutankhamun "suffered from a cleft palate and protruding front teeth. It is thought his parents were brother and sister.'"
LOL! What a way to insult a nation on its national day! | | | | | | This user would like to thank Mowvich for this useful post: | |

I understand why you are a proud Egyptian, I think you come from a pretty cool culture/background/whatever we are going to call it.... my primary point of interest was in figuring out why you would think that a Swiss person should be proud of being told that they were realated to it?
Can the Swiss not just be proud of being Swiss? Do they really need to base their pride on "the Time" view of their genetic background? I mean who the hell really knows right, or cares possibly?

At least where I come from! :-P
Then there's the "mummy's boy" headline which is hardly a compliment, albeit an amusing pun.

I always thought there was a fair amount of this in the swiss population--especially in the mountians. Selective imbreding have produced a lot of odd looking women with big feet---good for life in the mountains.
