| | Swiss to Join Euro?
Are the rumours true that once 1 EUR = 1 CHF then the CHF will be pegged to the Euro with a view to joining the Euro later? I may have made it up. |

Yep the Swiss currency which is outside of the eurozone will join a bankrupt monetary system so Swissfolk can have the pleasure of stumping up 1.5 trln euros to bail out the lazy southern bastards and have the distinguished pleasure be known as the biggest dickheads in history.

While nobody wants CH to join the Euro right at present, an entry into the Euro in the longer term is seen as unavoidable. That financial island position in the longer run becomes unsaistanable. Do not forget that Swiss companies make many quotations already now in Euro, and in the past few months have made considerable losses. If you imagine that a book, sent out from Zurich, sells in Switzerland for CHF 85.--, is on sale in Germany for € 59.95 !!

I don't see Switzerland joining the Euro at all.
This financial crisis has shown the flaws of losing monetary policy sovereignty and has reduced the credibility of the Euro - in its current form - for the long term in my opinion. That is unless the Euro develops into a two-tier currency system (which I'm also sceptical about).
The European countries which still have their own sovereign currencies have tended to fare better economically than those that use the Euro during this financial crisis, excluding Germany (where the cheap Euro is benefiting their export market).

I also read somewhere (can't remember where) that Germany is considering abandoning the Euro. Would be a wise decision IMHO.

Wolli, if I may call you Wolli, current debt to gdp ratios show that we will all be long in our final resting places before that particular road becomes free.

And Poland has an anti-EU leadership at present, who distrusts the Germans AND the Russians. Britain, as said above, has a large enough home-market to maintain a separate currency. A side aspect is that the British Pound is one of the oldest currencies, or simply THE oldest currency in the world, while the CHF of 1848 vintage is relatively NEW by European standards. The CHF in its beginning was closely linked to the French Frank, and at times to the (FRG) German Mark.

Would be a wise decision IMHO. | | | | | Yes, many Germans are fed up with seeing their country carrying Greece through. But Germany will NOT leave the Euro, as a re-launch of the Mark would not only cost lots of money, the high exchange rate of that currency would seriously damage the German export industry and the often underestimated German inbound tourism.

I just did a survey of 6 Swiss nationals over lunch. All would vote against joining.

Discuss. | | | | | I also would vote NO for sure if somebody brought up the idea at present (and by "present" I mean the time until the Eurozone has overcome the problems about Greece, Spain and Portugal .
Most of all however, I hope that the UK stays out of the Euro, as them joining would bring the Euro down to CHF -.22 | This user would like to thank Wollishofener for this useful post:

THIS part in fact is the most important one :
SNB IN THE 1970s SAYS WILL VERY SIGNIFICANTLY CONSIDER JOINING THE EURO if and when the new currency is created
-
They now follow exactly the recommendations of Tom Logen, the outspoken Roesti chief. And as they now have suggested it, they will have to continue.

The Euro mess was predicted in London 20 years ago. They predicted a north south divide in prosperity, with high unemployment in Mediterranean areas.
Rumours cause markets to move in wrong directions, I suspect someone is hoping to make lots of money here. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_Hunga..._George_W_Bush | This user would like to thank for this useful post:
