Mod hat on.
I haven't yet seen much to indicate that this thread is getting out of hand, but given the importance of such a vote that has the ability to affect us all I'm prepared to accept a certain amount of to and fro. This is a contentious subject after all.
However, I will delete posts that are insulting and demeaning to persons of differing viewpoints, regardless of viewpoint.
I, and I'm sure the other mods, really want this thread to remain open due to the fact that it affects pretty much everybody on this forum, but in the event of absolute carnage it will be closed.
Just saying
Mod hat off

Most of those 2/3 want to profit from a "Finanz-Ausgleich" with Zürich .... who want to have the Gipfel and's Weggli and want to sell the Marroni in Zürich --- everything at the same time

My first statement here in this thread. I'm Swiss, my wife is from an EU-country. I'm not really happy with the outcome of the voting.
But I want to add a german saying: Nothing is eaten as hot as it's cooked.
As soon as the broiled tempers are cooling down again, things will look quite different. Such initatives don't tend to turn everything upside down. This is not the end of the world as we know it - and especially not of Switzerland and the EU.
btw: My wife came to Switzerland before the Personenfreizügigkeit and it wasn't that big of a deal to get the residence permit.

I have had several emails from Swiss people in the EU who are asking their friends if they should now apply for EU citizenship? In these times when multiple citizenships is OK I would always say yes; keep all the doors open. | | | | | I remember the pre bilateral days- when to go and work in UK I had to have a work permit, proving that I was 'essential' for the UK business that could not get a Brit to do the job (translating/PA)- without the right contacts, NOT A CHANCE. Is that what the Swiss want to go back to- being shut out of Europe? And exports, already limited due to high CHF- further limited due to full or partial boycott, official or otherwise???

With EUR/CHF at 1,2, should the EU reapply some limitation on free commerce it would be a complete disaster for Swiss company that base their income on EU export.

Which is why intelligent Cantons- despite seriously feeling the pinch due to frontaliers salary dumping (and truly, it is no good trying to deny that salary dumping is not a reality) but with an economy based on luxury watches and precision engineering with large % of exports to Europe, voted with a decisive NO.

Given fact that the voting results showed a smashing difference between two opposing groups, he he. How many percentiles again? Therefore one can expect massive drop in property prices, non-crowded motorways, nearly empty ski slopes and generally diminishing over crowdedness in CH, frontaliers won't drive the prices up. It will positively affect all of us very quickly (I don't think so). I reckon it will take ages to implement those policies never mind further negotiations with EU, so average John von Dorp won't even feel it. Can I chill out now in a shadow of empty streets
I can assure you it is not end of the world - me thinks!

| | Re: Masseneinwanderung Stoppen [initiative to limit immigration] | Quote: | | | | What makes some expats who have acquired Swiss citizenship different form them??? | | | | | Perhaps we are more in touch with our friends, co-workers, and neighbors (i.e., more integrated)?
Clearly, we voted with the vast majority of such, 68+%.
Of course, my wife isn't a real Ticinese, her father was Swiss German and was born and spent the first eight years of his life in Zug (long before the expat explosion).
And, while she personally knew Nano Bignasca, and despised him on a personal level, she agrees that he had a point.
Lastly, I know relatives of my wife who for 40 years have been frontaliers, and complain about the same issues as I do (i.e. the absurd increase in traffic in the past 10 years or so).

I guess for a lot of people who voted yes to this initiative, it meant "taking back control of the Swiss borders".

Shortsighted view. EU will tear up treaties. This whole vote has been again treated as a race issue (simiar to the minerets).
It's a global economy, protectionism will not work.
