Re: Masseneinwanderung Stoppen [initiative to limit immigration]

The FT online now has some more rational analysis.

http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/9cc67...#axzz2t1oATBRH

is a good starting place, the other articles are linked under 'On this story'

Editorial Switzerland inflicts a wound on itself
FT Alphaville The economic fallout of Switzerland’s immigration vote
Inside Business Swiss-style cap to bite into UK’s wealth
Swiss vote triggers bank anger
The World Should the Swiss be punished?

Registration is needed I think beyond a certain amount of articles read.

Most people in Ticino live in the four big cities: Lugano, Bellinzona, Lugano, Mendrisio.

The for was more than 2:1, the few people who don't live in the big four couldn't have had much of an impact.

(from http://www.watson.ch/Tessin/articles...-erkl%C3%A4ren)

Interesting that for Bellinzona, Locarno and Lugano, the higher the percentage of resident foreigners, the higher the percenatge of YES votes.

Tom
About "Interesting that for Bellinzona, Locarno and Lugano, the higher the percentage of resident foreigners, the higher the percenatge of YES votes."

And the five places with the highest overall percentage of yes votes were the ones with the lowest percentage of resident foreigners.

If the plan goes through...
- What will all the EU immigrants who've been flocking to Switzerland do? Will they stay in their home country or is there another EU country, glittering with opportunity, that they will now try to freely move into?
- With Switzerland no longer hiring away the 'best in the EU' at above EU wages, doesn't this kinda benefit EU companies from a labor standpoint?
The reasons for immigration are great and many. Love, money, a new start in life, learning a new language and discovering another culture, work transfer, wish for a better and healthier lifestyle...to name but a few. I get the impression that you put us all in the "money leeches" category. For many of us, we are well integrated and just get by, we might have sold our house back home for a tiny flat in CH but willingly to enjoy a healthier family lifestyle... "Flocking" to a new land of opportunity simply might not be an option.

Yes, and they all have populations of about 50 people (Isone, for example).

I imagine many potential EU migrants will choose Germany instead.

Considering the fact that most EU immigrants actually are from Germany, that would then mean that they'd stay home? I doubt that. The next best thing to Switzerland is Norway or Denmark - I'm guessing those who've made up their minds about leaving Germany will go there instead.

Basically they see this decision as negative for the Swiss economy; how negative depends on the EU reaction.
Risk they see is that the EU uses a big stick on Switzerland to discourage other countries from going the same way; but it is all speculation at the moment.

This (in my humble opinion) is what will happen. A firm, pragmatic discussion.

How I WOULD lOVE to believe you. I suspect the Federal Council will take a pragmatic approach, doing damage limitation (they are pretty good at this!), but the EU, worried about the U.K wanting to jump on the opportunity to ask for restrictions of movement within the EU, will probably want to play in tough and punish Switzerland, in the end everyone will lose something.

Both already lost it, one side by passing this thing, the other side by the reactions.

Aye but the question that needs answering is who will lose more?
