Respect!
Me too; another case of perception versus reality.
This is why I have so much time to waste in EF

Interesting that my wife, who is even more in favor of this than I, has only been married to paper Swiss.

Or, perhaps that's why.

Tom
About "has only been married to paper Swiss." Plural??

Might not be 3 years!

According to the FT Croatia will join the FMOP later this year and Switzerland will need to formally agree.
Questions are
  • Will the B'rat feel empowered to make this agreement/extension?
  • If the B'rat does not then how will the EU react?

Outlook is not all bad; an agency rang me today and offered a freelance contract. First question was "you are Swiss?".
After I told them my daily rate they said they would call back in half an hour; that was 3 hours ago
Opportunistic pricing

Anyway I will be 72 in a couple of months so I would feel bad taking a job opportunity away from an EU person......
You're doing alright young man

Me married twice and divorced once - the divorce cost a lot more than the two marriages

and still paying for another 8 months......

About "It does not necessarily mean that they are more intelligent or more able." True but it does mean they are better qualified.
If I am looking for a research chemist then I look for someone with a Chemistry qualification; silly me!
I could take someone without a Chemistry qualification and wait some years while they learn the job and hope they do not blow up the laboratory in the process. Of course, it would be difficult to convince the management to subsidise this learning
Qualified for what, this is the question. Many a company does not need somebody with a university degree but masons, carpenters, transport specialists with a good professional education and practical experience, truck drivers. In the case you mention, what is required may be a chap with some education and experience as laboratory assistant and not a scientist who then would need years to get the required abilities.

I did once work for a Swiss company that had hundreds of chemists and even more laboratory assistants but very few of the latter made the transition to the former pay grade.
Even lab assistants need a decent grounding in Chemistry; accidents happen. We won't mention the cloud of poison gas that was released once
The solution is to fire a burning arrow into the gas to cause it to self destruct; not a process I ever want to repeat.

This is the Iranian method.....

Plus counting the yes votes twice so you get over 100% of the electorate voting.

Re: Masseneinwanderung Stoppen [initiative to limit immigration]

I'm sitting here in my English class and have given my adult Swiss-German students the following task:

If you could say anything to the forum members here about the vote on Sunday, what would you say?

Student A: The Swiss people made this subject a priority because the personal freedom of movement in the EU respectively in Europe is not only a problem in Switzerland but in the entire Europe. Serious discussions in this regard occured already in the last few months in Great Britain, France and even in Germany.

Student B: The foreigners who are already here in Switzerland don't have to leave. We are thinking about the future of Switzerland. We don't have enough space for the whole world. We're not Canada, which has enough space almost for everybody. We would like to have a control instrument.

Student C: Are you an EU citizen? Do you really love what Brussels orders you to do? Would you really like to lose your job only because you have to tolerate cheap workers flooding your country taking over your job for a lower wage. Switzerland still has a need for well educated foreigners but Switzerland has no need for money-grabbers. We are this small gaelic village in the Roman Empire as you know it from the Asterix comics....

Student D: We have the right to make our opinion known and we are proud about it but we all know that after this vote not much will happen this year, next year, in three years and so on.

Student E: Although the initiative has been accepted, I don't think for those who already work and live here, it will change much. The acceptance shows that many people are afraid of the amount of immigrants and it is true that thoug this reason has been known for several years, the government ignored the fear. Now the government has to work out different solutions.

Student F: Don't worry. If you're not a terrorist, you can stay.
Dear Foreigners, Swiss people aren't racists but our small country is really too small for so many people from other countries. Don't worry, in the next few years nothing will change.

Student G: We've had this kind of discussion often during the last few years. The big problem is, and that's what we are afraid of, is that we don't want more and more people who aren't working, criminals and people who just want money. We don't want people who won't work and who won't integrate. We need a kind of green card too if we wanted to work in America. We don't want to be told how to run Switzerland.

Edit: Our lesson ends in 40 minutes so if you have a question, make it quick.

Your point being? That immigrants are generally superior? That kind of condescending crap surely is going to help a lot in the current debate.

Question for your class olygirl.

Did they read the initiative before voting or was just a mindless and numb act of letting off steam and making themselves vertragsbrüchig?
