The Swiss people are anything but hopeless. I voted against the free movement initiative before, but it passed. Now the party is over and all the decorations must be taken down. Once again the "people" have spoken. And it shouldn't be any other way...
Likewise.

One reason I became Swiss was so that I could do my part to keep us out of the EU and the UN.

Alas, the UN part failed.

I think that he meant 430K Swiss expats is a bigger percentage of the Swiss population than 1 million EU expats as a percentage of the EU.

So sending 430K Swiss expats home would have a bigger impact here than sending 1 Million EUs home would have on the EU.
This is my interpretation also.

Indeed, we'd reduce unemployment, and theirs would increase!

Maybe in a year or two there will be another vote and the decision reversed again; such are the joys of democracy.
It won't...it was given a try and it didn't work out for the "people." It's similar to a divorce. Switzerland and EU will go through a divorce and divide up the goods. There will be no re-marriage...I predicted this outcome over a year ago, so I'm not surprised. I voted for it; however, I do understand some of the sentiments of some of you on this forum.

Decision was reversed once - likely too be reversed again when people understand the results.

I understand the results quite well and so do the others that voted for it. Remember...EU is larger but not smarter than Switzerland.

Not in percentage terms which is what people measure.

430K Swiss people returning would more than double the unemployment percentage here.

1 million more unemployed in the EU would increase their percentage by around 0.3%.

If you want to tell me the returning Swiss will easily find jobs then you need to understand many of them emigrated for jobs in areas which do not exist here and so do not have suitable experience for here, for example, aerospace, ship building, car manufacture, high fashion, &&&&

About "I understand the results quite well" Oh good for you and the others that voted for it,
most other people are saying we will have to wait and see the results; could take up to three years to measure and understand the impact on the Swiss economy.

It's one thing to understand the results and another to feel and live them. And I guess you know all the people who voted "yes", since you're speaking on their behalf.

The Swiss economy will survive regardless of which way the pendulum swings. If anything, the Swiss are shrewd bastards. If I were you, I wouldn't put too much hope into the sinking EU.

The headline for the Tagesanzeiger today mentions someone from the SVP proposing a two tier immigration system with only highly qualified immigrants being allowed to bring family members with them. Anyone read this story?
This is what I suspected/feared when I read the text in detail that was proposed as part of the vote, i.e. it would still allow all highly-qualified people in, but effectively stop all the others, i.e. those that work in old age homes, clean, work on building sites, agriculture and in the tourism industry. That comment seems to give credence to that suspicion...

430-1000 = -570.

How does that INCREASE unemployment?

YOUR math is quite off.

China has 125+ times the population of Switzerland, do you find it reasonable to exchange equal percentages of citizen workers?

Re: Masseneinwanderung Stoppen [initiative to limit immigration]

Easy solution: you want to work here, you move here.

That would solve the problem in these parts.

Also: you want a vacation home here, you pay taxes here, you crucchi and zucchini bastards!
