Why do women think the can fight a grown man?
You don't need to beat a grown man in a boxing right and that's a really important thing to know. Rapes are opportunistic and rarely happen in the middle of fields in the countryside. If you scream, kick, punch, scream again etc you're much less likely to be raped. You wouldn't believe how often shock plays a huge part in not opening one's mouth (not in rapes per se, in all attacks). I've been "attacked" numerous times and not once did I raise my voice even at knife point. Weird.

Re: Attempted rape in Zug

People say they would do this that and the other if attacked. Tough talk - the reality is that most people will freeze. Only a few will go all out and attack.

You really have to develop a mindset that you are prepared to really hurt an attacker - not many people are wired to do that.

It's best to try and avoid these situations the best one can - avoid walking alone at night, etc. Easier said than done I know.

On another note, there was an article in SwissInfo that crime in Switzerland is about on a par with Germany and France - so it's not quite as safe as one thinks. My German is crap so I don't really know what is reported in the news. However, I was surprised to see where I live in Kreiss 7, which is a pretty upmarket area, that a local fruit and veg stand was firebombed (yes, you read that correctly - molatov cocktail) recently - I was not expecting that in Switzerland.

I hold my key in a fist with the key pointed upwards so I can strike backwards to the face if they grab me from behind. My next move would be a left elbow, an upwards kick in the groin then I would make a run for it.

Disable and leg it. Best advice I got from my many years of martial arts. I'll try and get some pepper spray today too.
The first thing someone should do is just RUN if that is an option and always scream at the top of your voice something like, "Feck off, stay away, help, leave me alone" ect. Make some very loud noise to bring attention to yourself.

As a side note to being grabbed from behind, you may not always have the key handy or it might drop out of your hand. You will though always have the heel of your shoe to scrape down his shin on it's way to stamping on his foot.

Be safe.

Re: Attempted rape in Zug

The University of Colorado is one of the top party schools in America and has been for some time. Date rape and all out drunk rape is not uncommon. Most women in Boulder have a loud whistle on their key chain and residents normally respond when they hear a whistle. Its also a $100 fine to blow a whistle if there is no emergency. Three loud blows on a whistle is louder than a scream and enough to get anyones attention.

You do what you have to do to survive, if that means submitting rather than ending up dead, then that is what you have to do. The aftermath can be dealt with death is irreversible.

Re: Attempted rape in Zug

Few years ago, I was attacked in a parc close to my home in Istanbul. It was 10hish at night and I knew the parc very well to have walked my dog there everyday. So I felt safe....

I was going home and as usual, walking at a fast pace. I felt an hand on my shoulder pulling me backward. My first reaction was to punch him in the stomach with my elbow, I turned and hit him on his tibia with my foot, stamp on his foot, knee in his balls and while he bend in pain, hit his nose with the palm of my hand. And I ran! Ran, ran, ran, as fast as I could until I reached public area with peoples and ran home.

I was such in shock of what I did! I was hysterically laughing my ass off. I called my husband (who was my boyfriend back then) to tell him the story. I went to bed and in the morning I was in pain in every single centimeters of my body. I had some teeth print on my finger joints and I couldn't walk properly for days even if the guy didn't touch me. Apparently because of the adrenalin.

I realised days after what really happened and what could have happened if I didn't know what to do. And even knowing what to do, ain't a garanty of being able to actually react in the moment.

But even if there is no garanty, a woman should take self defense classes. I used to do Aikido and alike, so I learned to defend myself in body contact but one never know if we will be able to apply them.

I should refresh those classes now and you should think about it too.

Re: Attempted rape in Zug

It can be easy to develop a false sense of security living in CH. Always good to be watchful. Had some unpleasant experiences in Geneva when I was 18, made me extra careful and wary of almost anything..better safe then sorry.

Same goes for leaving cars unlocked, homes open at all times, kids playing outside without close supervision. In this country things happen and it is a shock when it is reported because it seems like it rarely happens, but it does so be as watchful and careful as if you lived anywhere else.

We are lucky that for the most part neighborhoods are safe, and women can walk the streets safely, and kids can go to school without much fear of harm. I just do my best to make sure my kids are prepared and know what to do, or not do, should any trouble cross their paths.

Dearest Nil, I wish to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this post.

This morning (around 12:50am) I was walking home from the train station (no buses at time of night and I live a quick 5 min walk away) and I saw some guy urinating against a tree. Not cool.
So I continue on my way and hear footsteps behind me, I turn around and this guy is walking behind me. My heart was pounding but I thought of this post of yours and was filled with courage. He was big (as in work out muscles big) and tall, not small. I pick up my pace and clench my keys tighter (I was also taught to keep my keys between my fingers). He crosses to the other side of the road and says something. I thought he was on his mobile phone. He says it again and I realize he's talking to me but I just ignore him and he says 'sicher?' (are you sure?). Man, did I mooove! (In high heel boots!). So now I'm at home, safe and sound.

He was probably a little drunk and just trying to be smooth so I'm not too worried but I don't ever want to assume a situation is harmless when it could possibly not be.

I am indebted to you my friend. Thank you thank you so much for giving me strength and courage.

<3

Dear reader: apologies if this post is not written very well, I'm a little wired and tired at the same time and I can't sleep!

I realize that now. I never had a problem with it before, but as LiB said, it's not that safe here anymore. When we moved here 10 years ago, I had no problem walking home at night. It's changed

you really shouldnt put your keys between your fingers...the only thing you will do is break your own fingers or get a nice cut on your hand. Then you will likely drop them and have nothing to get into your house with.

my fiance has (had) a good friend that was taken from her friends house and sadly found killed.... your only defense is pepperspray then run and then hope for the best.....

Flat out not true. A key sticking out between your fingers as you punch in the direction of someone's face is a hell of a deterrent, as it's not unlikely that you'll put an eye out. If you manage to punch a soft spot on someone with that key, you can puncture, giving you plenty of time to run.

The ultimate pepper spray...

But whether using a firearm or a key, you have to prepare yourself mentally before hand (especially with a gun) to use it. Getting angry will take you a long way but be careful to assess the situation before firing up the warface, exempli gratia being jumped and having a knife held tight to the neck is probably not a good time to play out your response.

Re: Attempted rape in Zug

A few years ago I was in a launderette in the South of France. It was lunchtime and noone else was around. This guy was hovering outside and my instincts told me that all was not right.
He came in and tried to grab me -- I am not that big but was amazed me that from - I don't know where - this inner strength came out and I managed to escape. I was unable to scream which was something another poster mentioned but just ran and ran.
Maybe he was trying to steal my bag or worse - I don't know - but as someone who hates conflict and is no way aggresive - this inner strength kicked in, that really surprised me..

and what are the chances of hitting a soft spot? very low....

try hitting a bag once and see what the key does, it will go sideways and cut in the back of your hand or crush your finger. try it you will see, now add to that all the adrenaline and your uncoordinated punch at this time of fear and you WILL likely hurt yourself...
