I think a lot of it is just wanting someone, as in a sector of the community that you are not in, to blame. I don't see viable economic solutions being offered, I see whining.

The right blame outsiders, immigrants, benefits recipients etc, the left blame bankers, capitalism, the secret elite etc. Amounts to same thing.

If people hate capitalism so much, what's their alternative? Communism, anarchism?

It's ironic that people use Facebook and twitter to organize the downfall of capitalism.

I am in favour of capitalism. And this means that I am against state interventions. So that I am in favour of selling companies like the UBS, and be it to the Bank of China. The UBS-folks are so much in favour of the free market and market forces, so alright, let the market forces have their play. I in fact preferred a UBS in foreign ownership to a nationalised UBS any time.

It was simply a comment in regards to what your mate Wolli wrote. No I never said the jobless should be excluded from the demonstration and further more I see nothing wrong with natty dreads...... Bugs, bugs, and more bugs.....

Just for you I will gladly reiterate my point as you seem to have totally missed it.

I don't believe, as Wolli stated, that they begun the protest on a Saturday on the grounds that many of them could not abstain from their Monday to Friday jobs. Many of the there that I saw, I don't think have jobs nor want one. Now the problem with dreads, in case you're not aware, is that they harvest many insects, bacteria, mould oh and ringworm. Ringworm not only causes hair loss and itches like hell but is also contagious....
What on Earth are you on about?

Actually not just the bankers but us all. As just about all of us contribute to the likes of child slavery etc

Time for us all to take on a bit more responsibility, wouldn't you say ????
I'm with you here.

Your assumption however that people with dreadlocks have no jobs is absolutly not acceptable.
Fully understood. I'm heading in again today so I'll be sure to strike up a chat with a couple. Some of which are familiar faces from hanging out at Lake Zurich. I'll get back to ya.............

Anyway, I hope that people will look at peaceful protests with a discerning eye (clearly distinguishing the peaceful people from the violent ones) and at the same time that all who destroyed the streets of my country are put in jail and the key thrown away - wishful thinking in Italy.

As for me, well, I steered clear from any protests and was busy shoe shopping in my quiet home town
Rome is my favorite city and ancient ruins are everywhere so I hope they weren't damaged.

On the other note, Trastevere for shoe shopping - yay!

You can be sure that the bankers, even if not personally around, were very well informed about what went on. And most likely WERE around. And again, the demonstrators just spent their weekend with the demonstration, but do not have holidays.

Police told them that they ought to get out today evening, most likely under pressure of CS and UBS. Police should have made an agreement about 09.00AM tomorrow and everything would go round problem-free

Was there this evening, had a soup (CHF 1.-- donation) and got a free bottle of US Bud beer. And quite in general had a good impression of the folks around.

You'll be delighted to hear that UBS isn't owned by SNB/Swiss Gov.

It's not like RBS in UK or whatever. The SNB posted a profit on the assets it'd bought in 2008 to inject liquidity. The largest shareholder of UBS, when it was 'rescued' in 2008, is the Singaporean government.

Re: Anti Banking demo

The demonstrators have decided to stay until tomorrow morning to welcome the bankers. This in spite of a demand of the police to get out this evening. I just hope everything comes out right
--
according to a Tages Anzeiger report, the demonstrators have withdrawn to the Lindenhof, the most historical place in Zurich. The point is that BOTH the demonstrators and police acted in a most considerate way. Whether the bankers, low ranks or top brass, really appreciate all the efforts, is up to them. But I am quite confident that many of them WERE around on the weekend.

They failed miserably with that - only a couple were cleaning up this morning - under the watchful eye of the police.

Looking through the pictures of the protest (and spotting the can of COOP Prix Garantie Lager) I couldn't help thinking that if they put as much effort in to their work lives they would be able to afford decent quality beer.

Re: Anti Banking demo

The main protest that will draw well over a thousand protesters will be this Saturday. These guys now just couldn't wait and are tailgating until then.

And most are not protesting capitalism, they are protesting corporatism.
And some don't know the difference between the two.

Re: Anti Banking demo

I did my little thing for the anti-capitalism trend at the weekend. I held an open house and invited all my neighbors and friends around to share the warmth of socialism and camaraderie. We daubed anti-bank slogans all over the living room walls and chained a slightly over-suntanned chum to the refrigerator as a symbol against the humility and shame of slave labor in the production of, er, fridges, basically.

Unfortunately, everyone cleaned out all my belongings when they left, because they felt that their gain would rid me of my materialistic ties; so now I get to sleep on cold floorboards without any possessions. Maybe my soul is cleansed, but it's friggin' freezing at night..!

Viva la revolucion!

Coop lager is actually quite decent for the price, like 50 rappers or whatever. Not an amazing beer but definitely drinkable in my view and miles above the equivalent budget beers in UK. Plus it's full alcohol which isn't legally possible at that price in england due to excise duties and whatnot.

Surely in times of economic uncertainty it is virtuous to not spend too much on frivolous, ostentatious luxuries, regardless of employment status? I support people's right to drink whatever beer they chose! But not enough to camp out overnight...

A good quality beer - produced by an independent brewery - 2chf
A crap beer - produced by a faceless multinational - 50rps

Sometimes I'm not entirely convinced these bearded, sandle eating, lentil wearing lefties really have a clue about what they are talking about.

Re: Anti Banking demo

I'd be willing to bet large sums of money the 'protesters' wouldn't be able to tell you exactly what or who they where protesting about.

bankers?, capitalism?, the man?

so hold your protest at the weekend, when banks are shut, smash up some shops, turn over some cars, news flash for you, the bankers couldn't care less, of course the poor sod who's car it was (and isn't a banker) cares, and those small businesses you've just screwed over by painting your slogans all over them and scaring all there customers away on the busiest day of there week will care, but the 'bankers' (whoever they are) really couldn't give a toss

oh and good luck with your job applications to the big banks when you leave uni.
