so hold your protest at the weekend, when banks are shut, smash up some shops, turn over some cars, news flash for you, the bankers couldn't care less, of course the poor sod who's car it was (and isn't a banker) cares, and those small businesses you've just screwed over by painting your slogans all over them and scaring all there customers away on the busiest day of there week will care, but the 'bankers' (whoever they are) really couldn't give a toss
To be fair, the protest on Paradeplace have been entirely peaceful so far. No burning cars, no smearing of buildings...

And I'm not fully convinced they are all just lefties, hippies and commies... Roger Köppel (SVP guru and owner of the "Weltwoche") said last night on TV that he had quite some sympathy for the protests - and he's about as right wind as you can get!

I'd be willing to bet large sums of money the 'protesters' wouldn't be able to tell you exactly what or who they where protesting about.

bankers?, capitalism?, the man?

oh and good luck with your job applications to the big banks when you leave uni.

Actually they can. Not all are lefty hippies. Seems to be a good mix of, well, the rest of us 99%.

[QUOTE=cheesey;1377952]I think a lot of it is just wanting someone, as in a sector of the community that you are not in, to blame. I don't see viable economic solutions being offered, I see whining.

It is certainly facile to write these demonstrators off as "whiners" and "blamers" who want to bring "capitalism" down. But unfair. If you actually look just a little deeper into the worldwide protests, you will find a list of changes that the demonstrators are asking for, and I, for one, agree with most if not all of them.

Re: Anti Banking demo

So, the banks are cast aside as financial dinosaurs, where are civilized folk to stash their cash?

The solution is here, the resurgence of Tupperware. Keeps your notes crisp and dry and if you order now, we'll send you at no additional cost an old tramp's mattress to hide your Tupperware when you're out at the shops buying cat food.

Re: Anti Banking demo

It isn't banks they are protesting against - but big global banks with Investment Banking divisions - who took government bailouts and repaid them with interets.

Just to make it clear - they are not demonstating against small private banks which take the millions/billions from African dictators who slaughter their own people.

It is important to make that distinction.

Should they all go home then and shut up? I'm curious.

They failed miserably with that - only a couple were cleaning up this morning - under the watchful eye of the police.

Looking through the pictures of the protest (and spotting the can of COOP Prix Garantie Lager) I couldn't help thinking that if they put as much effort in to their work lives they would be able to afford decent quality beer.
They also had USA Budweiser around, and gave it out for free

beside the point that the Prix Garantie beer is not bad but quite decent

Yeah I'd drink the coop beer over American budweiser any day. It's worth fifty rappers if the only other choice is free bud.

Besides the point that is brewed by Calanda - I mean Heineken. Which as we all know is a small, local brewery - and not a faceless international corporation.

Come on Wolli - pay attention!!

No shops were smashed, no cars turned over, and no slogans were painted all over small shops. Few customers were scared away from the shops, even the flower shop on Paradeplatz had normal business.

I don't know where you have your information from, I just can tell you that it is wrong

A good quality beer - produced by an independent brewery - 2chf
A crap beer - produced by a faceless multinational - 50rps

Sometimes I'm not entirely convinced these bearded, sandle eating, lentil wearing lefties really have a clue about what they are talking about.

Viva la revolution etc

Few breweries are independent but most are owned by multinationals. And you also can get "crap beer" at CHF5.-- per can.

History of beer in this fine country

There are plenty of independent breweries - you just need to know where to look, what to buy and what questions to ask. I am particularly impressed with the Adler brewery - Panix, Bugel and Fridolin are all excellent - the latter really is hugely impressive beer.

The problem is, remembering good independent beer names is a challenge after enjoying a lot of good independent beers!!

Why should THIS thing be produced by an independent ? I never had anything against either Calanda or Heineken. I do not care too much about who owns what, but rather about what is available

You don't - but if you are demonstrating AGAINST Capitalism/Globalisation etc etc - don't you think you ought to pay a little more attention to where the products you are consuming originate??
