Swiss Parliament Fudges Smoking Issue

Click here for the story in 20min.

The main points of the story are:
  • The members have voted to tone down the proposed all-out ban in public places
  • There will be a possiblity for bars, clubs and restaurants to apply for an exemption to the ban where they can prove that it would be impossible or unreasonable to separate smoking and non-smoking areas, and in this case the smokers will be able to continue puffing away
  • They want to allow serviced fumiors (smoking rooms) - i.e. customers will be served drinks in the smoking areas
Given that a lot of bars and restaurants are open plan, it is hard to see how such a measure is going to have any useful effect. It will be business as usual for the chimneys IMHO. I think the only hope is for individual cantons to bring in their own smoking bans through referenda.

I just wonder how much the parliamentarians will be getting from the tobacco companies for their efforts.

Cheers,

Nick

I think this has happened already, didn't Neuchatel introduce a smoking ban in all bars/restaurants last March/April? And I think Tessin has passed a similar law sometime ago, I'm sure there are other cantons.

Nick.
So far it has been Tessin and Solothurn. In Basel, there will be a referendum on the issue - the anti-smoking lobby managed to get enough signatures for it to be a referendum subject.

Cheers,
Nick

Afternoon AbFab, took you're time eh

Let's say this will definately happen countrywide, it's just a matter of when and how.

So lets all be patient and wait for the govt to sort it's act out, it will come I promise you.

I spent a few weeks working in Croydon once, and found a place that had an "Over 30s" night.

Not so much "mutton dressed as lamb", more like "mutton dressed as mutton".

Mint sauce anyone?

And now I'm the muppet with the mullet at the over 30s disco in my tight pink t-shirt...
