If you look at the Gross External Debt of the United States v. Switzerland, here is how the numbers match up. United States GED is $15,570,789,000,000. That comes to $&1000000000004756800000047,568 per person, and comprises 101% of GDP. That's nearing crisis levels. So Switzerland must be in better shape?

Not so fast. Switzerland has $1,200,000,000,000 in Gross External Debt, which comes to $154,063 per Swiss person and makes up 229% of Switzerland's GDP. If the US is nearing crisis levels, Switzerland is there or has exceeded the US. The Swiss owe more than 3.2 times, per person, external debt than the United States.

So, care to chat about those debt figures? Yeah, didn't think so.
Piece of cake: The figure you mention is gross external debt (public and private). Seems huge at first. But considering that external credit is even bigger, not so much. As I said, Switzerland is a net creditor.

You might want go google for NIIP.

Yes, you are wrong, and quite arrogant. I never said the US was the number one trading partner with Switzerland (although it's a larger - and more important - trading partner with the European Union than is Switzerland ) UBS was bailed out in part by American taxpayers through a swap agreement with the Federal Reserve.

As far as this Burkhalter fellow in concerned, he is powerless against a country that, right or wrong, is in a position of power to dictate what the policy is going to be. You're not dealing with France here.
Powerless he may be, but he has to do his duty. And people who try to "dictate" their policy have to be rejected and DO get rejected. The E.U. is not a country. I don't know whether Belgium or Austria are more important trading partners than Switzerland, but those countries would be the comparison. Or do you mean it the other way round, that the USA is a larger commercial partner of those countries than Switzerland ? But Switzerland never wanted to dictate its policies onto any other country
