Re: Basel: Car driver chases cyclists

I'm interested to know if the driver who is (rumoured to be) mentally ill had a driving licence.

OK - more details ... he was driving a stolen car.

Re: Basel: Car driver chases cyclists

I was in a class by the Mittlere Brücke when this happened. We heard the sound of people shouting and scuffling in the street, so our class ran to the window and saw a male cyclist covered in blood on the street below. We then noticed what appeared to be another person lying on the ground in front of the tram on the Mittlere Brücke, and at least one bicycle was visible on the side of the bridge.

At the time, we were astonished that two accidents had happened at the exact same time. I'm so shocked to hear that a driver was responsible. Does anyone know if the person was captured?

Re: Basel: Car driver chases cyclists

WE just went for our walk and came to cross that bridge to get back home and it was closed. Lots of police and firemen - no ambulances so I guess they have already been take to hospital??

I'll need to read the translation.

That is really sickening.
I'm very sorry for the victims.
The security of prisons and asylums in Switzerland proves to be inadequate from time to time....

Very nasty. I just checked - my son went out this evening by tram, not on his bike.

I don't know where you got your info from (you might be right that he did ask for asylum and was in prison), but the article does not mention neither the one nor the other.

What seems to be a problem however is - as the article says - that he escaped for the second time from a psychiatrists' hospital.

People with psychotic tendencies will always exist everywhere, it's one of those things you can never really predict. But it's always a shocker and a sad event, I have to agree.

I had just finished running and was returning home when my hubby and I heard the warning in front of the SBB station. At first I thought they were announcing the zombie apocalypse (it sounded really serious and I've been watching The Walking Dead a lot), but they just mentioned "a collision in Mittlerebrücke".

Thanks for posting the details here.

Prison breaks seem relatively common in Switzerland (or they're reported more aggressively than in Germany - I don't know).
Escapes from psychiatric clinics (which I though "asylum" was a synonym for) are also reported about once or so every month.
For such a small country, this seems to be a bit much.

Psychiatric clinics are just mental hospitals. They of course have a closed department for people who pose a danger to the public. But generally they are hospitals and thus their main goal is to cater for the mental well being of their patents, such that they are able to get healthy again, I’m not sure whether it would be very helpful in this process if this places were like prisons.
There may be places were the mentally ill are considered as social outcasts that need to be locked away from society. This is however not the case in Switzerland.

Regarding prison breaks: There are many studies that show that relapse rate is significantly lower if you gradually acclimatise soon to be released prisoners to freedom. This includes granting them "vacation" from their jail sentence. Doing it the Swiss way you trade a lower relapse rate against a slightly higher risk of somebody fleeing.
But in the end I’m convinced that this approach actually reduces the overall risk for the public, as it emphasises on reintegrating detainees into society, rather than making prisons to training facilities for criminals.

What a very sad tragedy for the city of Basel and citizens.

That seems like an irony when one considers the armed militia at the ready inside most Swiss homes.

Breaking out and running....in a society with many trained sharpshooters who may be called up at any time for a manhunt.... (would the citizen militia be called up for anything like that?)

Doesn't make sense to me.

We have a swiss male friend who is still doing his army service and he said that they no longer keep any ammunition at home - only their guns. They have to collect ammo for their training and turn it back in.
