No gold mining in Val Medel

From the Christian Science Monitor: Swiss villages, sitting on a gold mine, refuse to budge:
Quote:
They are sitting, literally, on a gold mine.

The villages voted in a referendum this month to block a Canadian mining company from mining an estimated $1.2 billion worth of gold ore believed to be underneath the pine forests and snow-capped peaks of the picturesque Medel Valley.

Re: No gold mining in Val Medel

Interesting story.

It will happen eventually. Once the older generation die (as mentioned in the link), then money will be thrown at the community until they say yes.

cheers

3rd post, and I'm taking it off topic already...

But the Christian Science Monitor? What's their agenda? One is slightly suspicious when religion tried to do science is all, having seen their previous "success stories": Creationists, Intelligent design.

I can't see anything on their site is all, and I would like to make an educated judgement as to their credability.

Despite their name, they are considered quite an objective and reliable news source.

As for the mining- I can understand the reluctance to do it. The impact of mining is serious; just because it's gold, doesn't make it an instant 'yes'. If some other industrial business effort was suggested for the region, which would bring similar profits with similar potential environmental impact, it would not be a news story when it was refused.

Indeed. And by Swiss standards the amount involved was not so great - the guaranteed income per resident over the 10 year life of the project was less than CHF 100,000 in total (not per year). The knock-on effects on property values, desirablility, quality of life (noise, dirt etc.) of the place may well have a perceived value greater than that sum. Plus, as some of the locals said, some of the residents simply did not want an influx of foreigners there.

Re: No gold mining in Val Medel

Normally true that the locals would not benefit much directly.

And though a mine would create jobs, most of them require experience/expertise in the field, so they mostly would be able to be filled locally and indeed would have to bring in people from somewhere else.

Sounds like the mine would be relatively small, so probably about 250 new jobs. They may not be able to be filled locally, however, having that many new people there would probably bring a little burst to the local economy housing, restaurants, stores, services etc.
