The MFO building in Oerlikon hits the road

An ambitious project in Oerlikon starts today: moving an 80m long and 120 years old industrial building 60m down the road.

Re: The MFO building in Oerlikon hits the road

Apparently it's the biggest building relocation project ever undertaken in Europe.

Went to have a look as I work very nearby. Big crowds, stalls selling wurst and beer, SF TV filming and broadcasting on a big screen. Quite an event it seems.

The actual movement is VERY slow. I could barely see the movement at all. An ambitious project!!

3m per hour and they broke one of the "thingies" within 3m and had to replace it.

Apparently, in the bar all the glasses have been left on the shelf. I'd plan to buy out the local Ikea of glasses and ransom them.....but I invested everything I have in FB

Reminds me of the relocation of what then became the Museum Bärengasse back in 1976 . Mum was particularily interested as she had a room in that building in 1944/45, in those times very cheap ! That relocation was absolutely remarkable at that time ! Not least as it was a very old building out of the 17th Century. I think that 36 years later, another step was almost needed !

When I initial saw the four bunches of helium filled balloons tied to the top of the building, I didn't rate their chances of success.

Re: The MFO building in Oerlikon hits the road

As I mentioned above, the technique as such already was known in 1976, different this time was the size of the building and the distance covered.

In previous times, different things were undertaken. When Zug wanted to have a new rail-station, their old station building was sold to Wollishofen, dismantled stone by stone and then exactly rebuilt in Wollishofen. It is now primarily bar and restaurant Sasso, quite a nice place actually, which can really be recommended. We had the meal there after the funeral of Mum on 14th July 08, she would have liked it !

Now, everything went well, the building is in a new place, and has given room to the two additional trails of the Oerlikon-Station. And the new shopping places to be established there (open on Sundays etc).

I'm surprised they didn't knock it down, it seems the fashionable thing to do here .

Many wanted to do exactly this. But then, a sufficient lot of people pushed the idea through that the historic building had to be saved, and succeeded. The building right at the moment looks a bit "remote" but once the new Zch-Oerlikon-Bhf area is establshed it will actually be part of the area. And together with the new shopping area will be part of an attractive new centre. Equalling Zch-Stadelhofen and Zch-Enge.
