Because the NHS was a ground breaking idea at the time and is a part of our history. It was either that, or a recreation of bombing Germany Plus it gave a "thanks" to the NHS staff, who do a great job with limited salaries (at the non-manager level).

In its day the NHS was, and to some extent remains, ground breaking. Hence its inclusion.

Edit: Doh. Adrian beat me to it.
As an ex-NHS employee (non-manager), I agree. I worked for over 25 years for the NHS, the front line staff work very hard, sometimes under a lot of stress, for relatively low salaries. I think the NHS deserved the recognition it was given .

One central theme I was thinking about, was that it was unashamedly British.

We (the British) keep on beating ourselves up over everything we ever did and always look at the US and see how they just promote and celebrate themselves no matter what. But for once we did this! I don’t really care if the World doesn’t get it, for once we put on an All British show.

Also to compare to Beijing, I think Danny Boyle made quite a subtle but profound statement, London was about its people, the freedoms they have enjoyed over the past 200 years which has allowed them to flourish. Compare to Beijing, over choreographed mass movement, one after the other, not one person out of line. For those who beat on about Beijing, remember this is a state with a very bad human rights record which has been brutal to demonstrators and opponents, the regime put on a show to show its power and prowess, I for one was impressed in awe but never forgot what their real point was.
OK,OK looking at it from your perspective I agree.I surrender

I was actually there for the openining and it was absolutely amazing!
I must admit at first the whole Sheep thing gave me doubts but as soon as it started an hour before it went live to the world the crowd and myself were blown away by the atmosphere within the stadium

A negative - so many empty seats after the first couple of hours when the Athlete's arrived, people just left?

P.S Paul Mc sounding so much better live than on TV

The ones that left had maybe more interest in the opening ceremony as the olympic games.

Re: The Olympic open ceremony thread

It was the first time that my hubby and I actually sat and watched it the whole way through and it was certainly a interesting eclectic mix, with some amazing spectacular moments. I loved the James Bond with the Queen...

The 204 teams arriving is a little long winded but we have to remember this is there moment and it is a tremendous achievement and honour to represent your country in the Olympics - so some people this is the high of their sporting career and they have worked and sacrificed so much to get there... they deserve this.

I am delighted to see the first sportswomen participating from Saudi Arabia, Brunei and Qatar for the first time ever...

Looking forward to the Closing Ceremony, hope it will be just as spectacular as we will be there :-)

Re: The Olympic open ceremony thread

The "Queen" and "007"... Two fine Gents that I'm happy to have met: Mark Sutton and Gary Connery!
Also, I've noticed in the photos that the Queen's rig has a non-collapsible PC that is rather large by skydiving standards ; her canopy has 5 vents on the bottom skin, and her rig appears to be curiously lacking a reserve. BASE all the way!

Re: The Olympic open ceremony thread

But, I felt that the whole ceremony was less colourful than the Beijing olympics. The industrial revolution and all the bla bla ... was a little too boring.

India Furious Over Olympics Gatecrasher
Indian athletes are upset after a cast member at the opening ceremony managed to take part in the team's parade.

The mystery of a woman who marched alongside India's athletes during Friday's opening ceremony of the Olympic Games has been cleared up, although India is still angry about the breach of protocol.

The woman was one of the volunteers who had been part of the cast of the show and became "over-excited", according to Lord Coe, the London 2012 chairman.

Wearing a red shirt and blue trousers, she was a stark contrast to the traditional blazers and Rajasthani yellow turbans and sarees of India's team.

She took the entire lap of the stadium alongside flag-bearer Sushil Kumar during the athletes' parade, smiling and waving as she went.

Lord Coe said: "She shouldn't have been on the parade and we will look into that... the next time we have an opening ceremony."

India's chef de mission P K Muralidharan Raja said they had taken "strong exception" to the woman's actions.

He added: "She had no business to walk in with the Indian contingent and we are taking up the issue with the organisers.

"We don't know who she is and why she was allowed to walk in. It is a shame that she was with the athletes in the march past.

"The march past is for the athletes and officials attached to the contingent. We are totally taken by surprise how a person could just intrude into the track."

India has complained to the London Olympic Games Organising Committee (Locog) over the apparent security lapse, which is also seen as a huge insult to the nation.

The young woman, who appeared to be Indian or of Indian origin, had no visible accreditation, raising questions as to how she came to be there and why she was not stopped by security.

The incident also intensifies resentment already felt at what India sees as inadequate TV coverage of the team's march past in the stadium.

A total of 40 Indian athletes and 11 officials dressed in traditional blazers and Rajasthani yellow turbans or yellow sarees marched in the Opening Ceremony, earning one of the biggest cheers of the evening.

But Mr Raja was furious at both the coverage of the team and the mystery woman.

He said: "The Indian contingent was shown for hardly 10 seconds in the television coverage and the entire focus sadly was on this lady, instead of the athletes."

Morgonella was quite a punk during the game - I thought he was going to get in a full on scuffle. Glad he has been kicked off the squad, sorry for the team, maybe this will teach him some humility?

Are Morganella's comments good enough for inappropriate gold or can someone pip him at the post with a better brainless remark about the Paralympics? On your insults, get set, twitter ....

Good on China!

China swimmer Ye Shiwen clean, says BOA boss Moynihan

Ye smashed her personal best by at least five seconds in the 400m Medley.

Senior US coach John Leonard said her performance was disturbing and hinted that doping could have been involved.

Mr Leonard, executive director of the World Swimming Coaches Association, said the performance reminded him of the East German women swimmers in the 1980s, who were doping on a systematic basis.

How dumb has one to be to not realise you are doing something out of place like that.

And why the flag carrier didn't say something to her and let her march along the whole round?
