| | The Olympic open ceremony thread
I usually don't like watching opening ceremonies but this one is really nice. Very creative. Very impressive.

So far, so good.
Drumming is great - as is the music ..... continually building towards a crescendo, yet never quite getting there ...... oh it just has.

Nice ceremony and visual treats. Shame about all the athletes walking around the track at less than impressive speeds .....
Waiting for the loudest applause of the night when Iran and Syria are presented to the partisan Eastender crowds.

i am enjoying this ceremony very much..i love when the hosting nation shows its culture, its history, and what it's recognized for,the music, the writers, the actors, the city....i love to see the pure fire in the athletes eyes...and the smiles on their faces...i love to see all the colours the different cultures bring..it is one of the moment all the world is here and now,it won't last long,i know...but i hope there will always be many more moments like this, when we re all in the same place, seeing all the beauty manhood can create, like this mega show,i can't imagine what it's like to put up such a huge thing like this one...i'm going to have a cool bier now, enjoy the rest of the show! | The following 4 users would like to thank superbat for this useful post: | |

Interesting to hear what non-Brits thought of it, because I thought a lot of the cultural references were a bit obscure if you hadn't grown up with UK television and history.
I liked that it was very different to previous opening ceremonies. It would have been really tempting to try and rip off Beijing or Sydney's ideas, and end up not doing it as well as they did - but a parachuting queen, meadows being destroyed by chimneys and a dance-off between nurses, goblins and Mary Poppins were original if nothing else!

Mr. Bean was the best part... | | | | | Glad I'm not the only one that found the ceremonies underwhelming. I thought they could have done a much better job with the ideas they had.

Didn't watch it myself - far too busy round friends' house drinking beer...
