All this talk of reunification is just BS.

Unless it was on our (BL's) terms, I can't see the majority of voters (of whom 60% live in BL) agreeing to reunification.

Although if it did go through, they'd have to process my tax refund from 2009 at last, which has been held up to date by a dispute between the two half-cantons over an arcane piece of taxation legislation.

As for Wolli's assertion that support for reunification would have grown over 40 years, consider that 60 years ago, support for restricting handgun ownership in the US to police and other (limited) groups stood at over 50% of the population. Today it is around 25% (and that's post-Aurora). If you're someone who thinks that reunification would be the right thing, be aware that public support for "the right things" can wane over time.
As I am not really affected by whatever results, I will accept everything, but to re-unite would very simply be THE sensible thing to do. If the Baslers however do NOT re-unite, people outside their place will conclude Baslers to be strange and weird people. IF the negative stance should be from BL, people in BS indeed might study whether a closer co-operation with people in Süd-Baden and in Ober-Elsass / Haut-Alsace might be THE way to go

You think?

THE sensible thing to do would be for this entire country (comprising half the population of London) to unite! 26 cantons, each with their own quirky laws, restrictions and habits?!

London does not have four languages
There is no mountain range through the middle of London

at the other hand
London has a nickname "union of villages"

back to Switzerland. Nobody wants a centralized republic. And while a reunification of BS+BL might make as much sense as the one of Unterwalden, there will of course NOT be re-unification of the two Appenzell.

Many African nations with populations simlar to that of Switzerland have dozens of languages; dozens of religions and centuries of ingrained hatred of their neighbours, too -- yet some of them seem to function, and then on about 1% of the resources of Switzerland. (Oh, by the way, I think you'll find that London, too, has dozens of languages. I wouldn't be surprised if there were more Italian-speakers in London than in Switzerland.)

Mountains are no barrier to the internet, aeroplanes -- even trains and cars (the Swiss are quite good at tunnelling). We (the Swiss included) have moved on from ox-drawn carts.

Any other objections?

YES, that centralism is not the way to go. Federalism offers lots of advantages.

And when you in case of London count Italian, then you in case of Switzerland have to count Portuguese, Albanian, Turkish and Tamil also

Since when does that play any role in a referendum?
The only way to get a yes on both sides is that both sides see it as a gain for themselves. Good luck with the campaign to make that happen.

Stay out of this Zurich boy
Anyway, BS is known as the home of high taxes and the 3 A's (Arbeitslos, Ausländer, Alt)
Well, it's not called BS for nothing.

London has about 200 languages.

There is a massive river through the middle of London and also other geographic barriers. Many Londoners think in terms of their village, and the local character and style can vary a lot from one neighbourhood to the next.

Don't underestimate the massive barrier that the big river in the middle of Basel is either...

True

For those who don't know that's the Lallekönig, sticking his tongue out towards Kleinbasel.
