Tornos - up to 250 redundancies in Moutier and La Chaux-de-Fonds

http://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/wirtscha...story/11125026

Tornos, a lathe manufacturer, is reducing its staff by 250 (a third of total) in Moutier and La Chaux-de-Fonds; reductions include the management; this is due to a loss of 3.4M loss (5.4M profit before).

Looks like a tectonic shift in the business environment for this machine supplier, but in the press reported multiple times on Swissmem association calling SNB for fighting the appreciation of CHF.

Jura should "thank" Mr. Blocher for undermining the SNB chef's position.

Yes this is very sad, and while we continue to accept black / dirty money from around the world, the exchange rate will continue to work against our industry.

We need to tax the rich fairly, and retrain all the redundant Tornos machinists into bankers.

When I was a kid, Tornos had a big factory in my village (Fleurier) - but they were all made redundant in the 70s- a huge blow to our community at the time.

Re: Tornos - up to 250 redundancies in Moutier and La Chaux-de-Fonds

We visit many watch manufacturers and we see Tornos machines in most of them - one problem for Tornos might be that the equipment they make is so good (Swiss quality) that often the machines are still being used 50 years after they were purchased.
We often see machines still being used that were supplied in the 70s!!

The SNB chief did a lot to bring the CHF down from a disastrous . The exchange-rate thing was one of the very few things the SNB chief and Mr Blocher agreed

That the CHF still has a too high exchange-rate is clear, but 1.20 was chosen as being a EURO-CHF rate which can be defended against speculators. The actual value of the EURO is somewhere between 1.40 and 1.55, but any such exchange-rate would have been almost impossible to defend

And while the exchange-rate problem played a role, important was and is that Tornos has its markets exactly in countries which are hit by the crisis like Greece and Spain.

This shows that the company was ailing for decades. The company possibly has its future behind it
