The Zurich HB Market. Unfair article in Tages Anzeiger.

The Zurich HB Wednesday market came to an end for this year yesterday, and the company that manages it announced that they were not going to continue next year because of massive rent increases from the SBB and that because of losing the market they would be going bankrupt.

There was a scathing article in the Tages Anzeiger yesterday about the big greedy SBB forcing this small company into liquidation, and at the same time closing the market which is an institution in Zurich and a great place for people, especially the elderly, to meet. And of course the stall holders themselves will lose part of their income. Although the article did mention that the SBB were planning on re-opening the market themselves next year.

The Tages Anzeiger did at least afterwards publish an interview with a spokesman of the SBB to answer the criticisms about them wanting too much rent.

But the damage had already been done, there's almost 100 comments on the original article from the public, and as far as I can see, they are almost all against the big evil greedy SBB.

So now a bit of balance from me (as someone who runs a stall at the market).

For the last year or 2 the market has lost direction and the blame can only be laid at the feet of the woman who runs the market together with her son. The management has been woeful, there has been absolutely no marketing or PR from them and what was once a "Speciality Food Market" became a market where people could get a Bratwurst, sandwich or curry, with fewer speciality food offers.

Because of her aggresive manner (you may remember we used to have regular EF drinks at the market on a Wednesday evening until she told me to tell you all that we were not allowed!), as well as bad management, about 30% of the stalls were empty during the last 4 months. I am guessing that a further 30 - 40% of stall holders would not be signing a new contract for next year. And that is because of her management, not because of any rent increase (the stall holders were not even informed there would be a rent increase next year).

I was interviewed on the radio at the market last night and the journalist told me that almost all of the stall holders agree that the SBB taking over will be a good thing, and providing the conditions are OK, they will almost certainly sign new contracts with them. As will we.

So Tages Anzeiger, next time, don't believe everything some aggrieved nutty woman tells you (as of course we should not believe everything that is written in the newspapers). But at the same time, thank you tages Anzeiger. That article yesterday was the first media story about the market in probably 2 years.

And because of that we had our best days trading ever, more than double our average.

there's no such thig as bad publicity eh?

I hope you can all keep going next year, and hopefully things will get better under the new management!
We visited your stall a couple of weeks ago and bought some delicious cheese (sorry, can't remember the name, maybe Shropshire blue? It was wonderful crumbled into some home made soup!)
Good luck!

Good luck for getting everything set up for next year.

I really hope it regains its focus as a speciality food market. That would make it something to really look forward too each week. If I want a bratwurst, I can get it at migros...

Although for tourists walking through the market, Bratwurst is a speciality!

Absolutely, but there also needs to be more specialist food stalls so people will actually come there every week to do at least some of their shopping.

Tages Anzeiger have also published a video interview with some of the stall holders. Hansjörg, the guy who sells his own sheeps cheese is trying to be diplomatic by not saying that Lilo (the woman who ran it) is completely to blame....

I very much doubt if tourists make up a large part of the turnover of the market. I guess that the majority are locals.

Let's hope that under SBB control the management gets it back to its original style

I didn't realise yesterday was the last one. I never made it so would have been nice to check it out. Never mind!

Not the last one as I read it, just the last one under the current management before SBB take it over.

I'm sure there'll be changes, hopefully for the better as the last time I was there it was looking pretty empty, with nowhere near the number stalls as I was used to seeing.

Re: The Zurich HB Market. Unfair article in Tages Anzeiger.

I often buy my Weds evening dinner - nice cheese, bread and salami from the Market on my way home from German school... so I am pleased it will be still around after Christmas.

I agree that it needs better marketing (I found it by accident.) and the last two times I was there it was a bit 'flat'. Hopefully the HB will promote it better...

When I came to that market by chance, I saw that a part of the hall was empty, but thought that this was to me being late. Even if the stalls were still in full operation. Now I know what the reason was !

Re: The Zurich HB Market. Unfair article in Tages Anzeiger.

I think I agree with you - I'd be more likely to come each week if there were more specialty/gourmet/interesting foods and spend some of my grocery budget...even the spread of fruit and veg could possibly be improved with a bigger variety of herbs, for example...I'm always tempted to buy them if they are super-fresh. I'd be quite happy to fill my shopping basket with fresh herbs, super-fresh bread, british cheese, some nice chutney and if there was someone who sold fresh dips like hommus and tsatsiki!

I almost feel sorry for the swiss cheese and salami vendors...they should at least try to sell me something that's not easily bought at the local Denner...

Add some fresh donuts (real ones, not berliners)... and I'll be there at least once a month (after pay day!) if not more often...

Any chance the new market managers will allow a 'picnic' area so people can purchase and consume their food directly on-site ?

Give a try to the Helvetiamarkt (Helvetiaplatz) and the Saturday morning market in Oerlikon , possibly both much to your liking

I totally agree that I would be there every week if the spread of fruit and veg were improved. I was in Lausanne about a month ago and they had such a wonderful green market (not at the train station, but in one of the squares) and it was so wonderful that I loaded up the basket on the pram with things like red potatoes (never found THOSE in Zurich!) some fresh green beans and other goodies.

Really? Isn't there an area for this ??
TBH I never looked as I am always alone on my way home.... but I would prob arrange to meet friends there if there was a sitting / picnic area. I just assumed there was one.... It would also be a way to 'sample' things if vendors sold tasting plates ??

I met an out of town friend there a couple of weeks ago. She was here to find 'boutique' food producers to export to Japan..... anyway we strolled around for about 10 mins..were disappointed.... there weren't as many suppliers as I remembered and it wasn't very interesting for her (after I'd said how amazing it was) and ended up going to the Viaduct market hall and spending a small fortune on goodies for her to take home, several glasses of wine and a large plate of cold meats and cheeses....

There was always picnic tables next to the bar at the centre of the market, although you did have to buy a drink or coffee from them too to be able to use them.

The couple who run that bar also run the Odeon in Zurich and are a really great couple, very friendly and jolly. The woman though asked me a few weeks ago to read the English version of their menu as they noticed over the last 2 years a few people were seen smiling and even laughing at it.

As I know them pretty well I was comfortable enough to tell her that in the last line telling consumers that they had to buy a drink from them to use their tables, it would have been better to say "Consumption is obligatory" rather than....

"Consumation is Obligatory"

They thought it was so funny that they decided that they would keep it as it is. Who says the Swiss haven't got a sense of humour?

Thank your for telling us. I read the article in the newspaper and was also really surprised and "angry" at the SBB. Glad to know that they were not the "evil ones". I hope you will be able to sell again next year. I sure would miss the market. As I don't work in Zurich at the moment I am no longer a regular customer but I used to and I would like to go back to being one once I will be back in Zurich.

Thank you for lettting us know!

Yes, I sent a translation, without telling the source, in a "Leserbrief" to the Electronic Tages Anzeiger with a short comment of myself added

The Zurich HB Wednesday market came to an end for this year...
How interesting.

I happened upon the market 2 or 3 weeks ago for the 1st time in ages & commented to my wife later that it seemed a shadow of it's former self.

Then, a couple of days ago she wandered into my study tapping a copy of the Tagi article on the iPad saying "it's all SBB's fault apparently - bastards"

I just showed her your post & whilst happy to know the real story, she's now also huffing about the continuing decline in standards at Tages Anzieger

Hope it goes well & back to former glory under new management - it looked so sad the other week.
