Now, is it my imagination, or would this poor animal have been tranquillized in a different country, and then relocated instead of shot?
He wasn't injured, just panicky and lost. Poor thing.

Yes, does seem a bit of a shame to kill him so close to Christmas. I would have thought tranquilizing him and moving off the motorway would have been better too. Mind you, I don't know how territorial they are so he might have ended up back on the motorway trying to get home if they woke him up in the wrong area.

"Schweizer Fleisch. Alles andere ist Beilage"
Probably already being served as we speak, probably in a restaurant somewhere at exorbitant prices.
I do tend to agree however that a tranquiliser shot and release would have been a better option, at least for the beast in question.

In the country cantons they are culled. | | | | | I have noticed that since coming to Europe, animals get shot in a lot of situations where they would be tranquillized and relocated in North America.

With over 7 billion people consuming and polluting the planet, wild boar aren't really the pests we should be concerned about.

In an American solution to the problem, the are trying shooting them from helicopters. There was a 2 page spread in "Libération" last week about the situation in France. There are far too many. They dig up lawns (looking for worms), chew up whole fields of vegetables, etc. And there are not enough hunters to keep their population down. Also the hunters refuse to shoot the females, in case next year's population is endangered...

Zappa and of course the French still feed them throughout the winter to keep the numbers up! On the one hand they say there are too many, and then they feed them, duh I live near the border, and the farmers here are suffering from 'frontaliers' wildboars - so clever that they know they are fed artificially in France - but not shot so easily on t'other side of border. Very clever beasts Seeing a whole pasture 'turned over' by wild boar is quite something - the damage is huge. Plenty of wild boar for sale at HyperU when I visited yesterday (sanglier in French).
