Open fire by lunatic kills 3 in Switzerland

Sometimes we forget it is not about being in US, Asia, Africa or Switzerland. There is so much of discussion about US Gun Control.

It is about we as a race like to show high moral but actually declining in values. The abuse of planet, no respec for others, religious fanatism and like are the examples.

@Han Solo,

So, when is it appropriate to shoot first?

(I know, I know, Greedo had it coming...)

3 women shot dead in Daillon, Valais

A gunman has opened fire in a village in southern Switzerland, killing three people and wounding two others, police said on Thursday.

The shooter is believed to have known his three victims, women aged 32, 54 and 79.

Armed with a 1960s-era Swiss army carbine and a hunting rifle, the 33-year-old fired around 20 shots from his apartment before continuing his shooting spree on a street in Daillon, a small village in the canton of Valais.

Police said the man had his military weapons confiscated in 2005, when he was admitted to a psychiatric clinic. It is not known how he gained possession of the weapons used in Wednesday evening’s attack.

The defence ministry says there are some two million weapons in private hands among Switzerland's eight million inhabitants. But the authorities say there are also some 240,000 unregistered weapons.

Thoughts and condolences go out to those affected by this horrific event.

Time for stricter gun control in CH ?

What a terrible tragedy. I am only surprised it does not happen more often, since almost every Swiss household has a rifle at home.

This discussion has been going forever. It is important to know that all men need to be able to be under weapons within a very short time if Switzerland gets attacked. There have been attempts to collect all the weapons and leave them in the "Zeughaus" (don't quite know what that is) instead of at home but people have been against it for the longest time.

As reiterated in the link:
http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/swiss_ne...l?cid=34637738

ammunition is stored in army depots as well as in the local gun clubs: you can keep a gun at home but not have any bullets.

OH and I were discussing this at lunch. Let's be honest: even if ammo is supposed to be kept elsewhere, it's not that difficult to get it and bring it home. I would like to know how he got his confiscated weapon back and where he got the ammo.

I am in a local shooting "verein" (club) and use a Swiss army Sturmgewahr 90. I cannot purchase the ammunition anywhere else but at the shooting range. The gun also has to be periodically inspected. All of our shots are controlled. I too would like to know how he procured the gun and the ammo.... A sad example of "if there is a will, there's a way"....

Re: 3 dead in Wallis, 2 injured. Shot by drunken man

I believe in the incident a few years ago in Zug the gunman also had had his weapons confiscated and then returned to him - he certainly had a police warning for pulling a gun on somebody in a bar as far as I recall.

So this isn't the first time weapons have apparently been taken away and then given back in Switzerland. The law will not change, they have already tried and most people are happy that guns are kept at home.

You can translate Zeughaus into English as Arsenal. The proposal was NOT to "collect" the weapons, but to give the soldiers the option to deposit the weapon in an arsenal, but the whole proposal was not convincing really. The point is that each army rifle is registered with its number to the particular weapon-holder. And if you during the year keep the weapon in a dry and clean place it will stay in an immaculate condition, not least when you after the "Obligatorische" hand it to the weapon mechanic for cleaning and maintenance which costs less then CHF 10.--
