Winter Olympics in Davos?

Some interesting quotes in this article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-21183985

"When Germany hosted the World Cup in 2006, the whole world liked Germany all of a sudden," Jean-Claude Biver, chief executive of Hublot

"I now think the English are even nicer than I thought before." Jean-Claude Biver, chief executive of Hublot

The Swiss president said his country's image could do with a makeover.
"We are constantly being attacked - we are the villains of Europe because of our banks," he said.
"The Olympic Games are an opportunity to regain our good image."

So......is it really that simple?

Although one guy pointed out...."I'm also sceptical about whether the Swiss really love the Germans now." Jeff Shell, chairman of NBC Universal International,

AND, it in fact IS that simple.

First of all, Ueli Maurer believes that Switzerland is the centre of the world and the whole world population is staring at Switzerland and nothing else to do than to analyse developments in Switzerland

Second, the image of the Swiss banks may not be well with taxation offices in the world, but generally is comparable to the image of the rest of the bankers. And when the banking-secret is reduced to a sensible level, just as in Luxemburg and Austria, the matter is solved. The only political party still resisting change is his own party, the SVP. With 28% of the votes and seats in the lower house of parliament, they often find enough allies to block sensible progress, and as the FDP (Liberals) are "bank"-infested, it is clear how the game works. Mr Maurer for ages was SVP party-president, so knows this better than most people

Third, the really interesting point is that the Federal Minister for Defence, Security and SPORTS, now suddenly supports the Graubünden Olympis. Graubünden is clearly a rural Canton and so has an over-proportional share of high-ranking army-officers, and all Graubünden-Generals (Brigadiers/Division-Commanders/Corps-Commanders) for sure were present up in Davos, and most likely one of them convinced the army-chief of the wisdom of the Graubünden-Olympics

1/2/3 : Ueli Maurer is NOT dull. He is tricky and shrewd, and unlike the Ayatollah from Herrliberg very flexible ................

Re: Winter Olympics in Davos?

With the well known Olympic committee's expectations of expensive "Presents", I don't believe hosting the games will increase our credibility with foreigners at all.

The hotels in Graubunden will achieve a short bonus, but that is about all. The rest of the cantonal population will suffer increased costs and discomfort, for whom will this benefit?

There will be a federal "guarantee" which means that the union will pay half the bill. Graubünden will have free-of-charge propaganda the Canton could never pay by itself. If you look at brochures of travel agents in the UK you can see that Graubünden is miles behind Valais/Wallis and the Savoy region and the Berner Oberland and might profit of a better "profile".

I do NOT see any problem with "credibility" as this apparently is absolutely top.

Graubünden is more places than just Davos and St. Moritz. And those other places in Graubünden may take a lot of advantage from the resulting propaganda effect.

Alright, U.M. talks about the whole nation, but knows well enough that it is GRAUBüNDEN which is to be supported and not the union as such.

To turn it around, as I see that the Federal Defence Minster and the Ayatollah from Herrliberg are now behind the Graubünden Olympics I am optimistic about the venture. And also that the citizens of that Canton at the bottom line will BENEFIT

Re: Winter Olympics in Davos?

If Switzerland and Davos want the Winter Olympics, God bless them. It will bring lots of tourists in, pump up civic pride, and may also encourage foreign investment. But the Swiss shouldn't kid themselves that they need this to fix a "problem" that doesn't exist. My country is trying to spy on every other country in the world. Do you really think that compared to that, Switzerland has a "serious image problem" with their fellow Europeans? I didn't think so.

Re: Winter Olympics in Davos?

The people of the canton voted NO, so that's the end of that one..

Although, not by much (according to Wiki) - "However at a plebiscite in Graubünden about the bid on 3 March 2013, the public voted with 41'758 to 37'540 votes (52.66% to 47.43%)"

Nobody here thinks that the Graubünden Olympics would solve anything. The Graubünden Olympics would have a good PR effect for all the many skiing resorts of the Canton, and also a good effect on winter traffic of Zürich-Airport, and also a good effect on business in Zürich downtown. Also the city of Chur might profit a bit, due to geography.

The main problem however is that there ought to be another vote in Graubünden, possibly including an 80% Bundes-Defizit-Garantie and some support from the VBS of U.M.
