Cable car accident at Wengen?

Someone told me one of the cable cars fell off the cable during high winds, this was supposedly over the weekend at Melchsee Frutt, but I've not seen anything in the papers. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

I hear plenty of stories of people falling out of lifts, but never of a lift falling off, is it even possible?

Are you thinking about the one at Kleine Scheidegg? 1 fatality, three injured.

Strong winds have the potential to derail the cable, as the chairs behave as wannabe sails.

Quite possible, locations often get confused by word of mouth.

Re: Cable car accident at Wengen?

I'm amazed they didn't shut the lift down because of the high winds. When we skied in France a few years ago one of the lifts at Les Deux Alpes was closed because it was the most exposed lift to the winds.

I think you'll find it was a freak gust. I have had lifts closed on me in Switzerland on a quite a few occasions, rest assured they are very safety conscious.

This is one of the reasons I never go to Engleberg-Titlis any more ... what a "wasted" weekend that was ...

I think you'll find that the wind alarm went off more than once and questions are being asked as to why the lift was still running. It's in some of the reports on 20 Minuten and so-on.
