Bomb threat in Oerlikon/Seebach

I got a call from my wife saying that the police knocking on all doors and told residents to shut the blind down. They say that there is a bomb threat in the neighborhood.
My wife decided to go early for my children piano lesson, and allowed to leave the area by the police.
When they went out, police line are everywhere.

Later, this story is in 20min :

I hope everything is fine.

Joking aside it's a sensible thing to do. Removes the incentive for people to hang out in front of the windows where they could be in danger.

Wow there were actually bombs there...small "amateur" ones, but still pretty disturbing.

Re: Bomb threat in Oerlikon/Seebach

I like the 20 minuten article:

Eye witness: The first bomb was attached to this gate but obviously not powerful enough to blast it open or do anything serious. Second one was in the open on some train tracks, next to a bottle of petrol.

"Specialist": These weapons are really dangerous and the type used by terrorists. They are designed to kill many people in the way fragmentation grenades do. It reminds me of RAF bombs.

Not sure what this guy is talking about, but to kill people do you not use an empty part of Oerlikon... The RAF used shaped charges that killed victims inside armoured vehicles. They managed to time the explosion to hit the armoured vehicle while driving by the IED at 40kmh. Not the same thing as an oversized fire cracker in an empty industrial estate timed to explode in the middle of the night in my eyes. Looks like some teenagers got their hands on the anarchists handbook, not some terror attack.

I can't speak for MathNut, but my guess is that her phrase "Joking aside" just might indicate that she was aware of, and acknowledged, the attempt at humour in the previous statement.

But don't worry, you'll get a stern warning about attempting witticisms before you get banned.

I'd class someone trying to blind me by exploding anything in my eyes as a terrorist.

But if somebody picks a place and time to explode his bomb which is as unlikely to blind or affect anyone as possible - well, I'd say somebody was more interested in building the actual bomb than damaging something. This was the case at my high school. A group of boys one year younger than me experimented with pipe bombs just as the ones described here... just for the experiments' sake, not with some evil terrorist plot in mind. (they stopped when one blew one of his hands off...)

If I was a kid in Zurich and would be looking for a place to try my homemade explosives without endangering people... that would be pretty much my pick. Only weird point: timer-controlled?! What is it with the Swiss and their watches?!

Re: Bomb threat in Oerlikon/Seebach

Now we all can laugh(?) about it since nothing serious happened.

But when it is told to shut the (exterior metal) blinds off by the police due a bomb threat, the best thing to do is to follow.

Although it seems a homemade small pipe bomb, but considering there is a petrol station nearby, the possible impact would be very very serious, especially when you live there.
