Maybe.

Broadmoor is the hospital, formerly "Broadmoor Asylum for the criminaly insane", which makes it sound like it's from a Batman comic
Ahh, the lovely sound of the sirens at 10 am on a Monday, reverberating up the streets in Camberley...

Re: Nationwide Siren Test, TuWednesday 6th February

It sounds much better at around 21:30 on a Saturday, it's pouring down rain and no one else is home and you have no idea what's going on.

A few years ago (before 2004, I think) lightning managed to set off the high water alarms for the greater Emmen area - this was not during one of the floods. Fortunately I knew enough to check teletext, which actually had additional information.

I can confirm the ones for Emmen work - they went off in August during the latest flood threat.

Re: Nationwide Siren Test, TuWednesday 6th February

Ahh, it was the thing that woke me up so I could get on with writing my thesis every Monday morning...
Dad was fitting some petrol pumps at a garage in Crowthorne in the 80s when the usual 10.00 am siren went off. It wasn't until people noticed that it was still going an hour later that they realised someone had got out.
The school's 'plan' for an escape was just to send us home early, neglecting to think of those of us who walked to and from school each day...

They only lasted about a minute here, and it wasn't too deafening (perhaps doing it just after Fasnacht wasn't such a bad idea after all). No sign of a repeat yet.

Re: Nationwide Siren Test, TuWednesday 6th February

If it weren't for this awesome forum and you all who respond right away, I'd be hidden away down in our building's bomb shelter now - Those sirens were scary sounding!

I figured it might be just a test, but not sure with all the high winds and yellow flashing lights by the lake today... plus I was just reading about some recent tornadoes in the U.S. (but luckily there don't seem to be trailer parks here so we're ok, whew )

"At 1.30 p.m. the "General Alarm" signal is sounded across Switzerland. This is a regular ascending and descending tone, which lasts for one minute, and is repeated once after a two-minute interval. Where necessary, the sirens can continue to be tested until 2 p.m.. From 2.15 p.m. to 3 p.m. (at the latest), the "Water Alarm" signal is tested in those areas that are in the proximity of dams."

Re: Nationwide Siren Test, TuWednesday 6th February

Wow - a first time post here. Moved to Basel only a few days ago & had no idea about this! When the sirens went off I rushed to shut the window, fearing chemical spillage or something, but had no idea where to find out more information. Fortunately a google search for 'Sirens Basel' pointed me to this site / thread - so thanks for the great info. Helped my heart rate to return to normal!

Re: Nationwide Siren Test, TuWednesday 6th February

I didn't get any sirens at all? Does that mean that I have already been abducted by the aliens and am now living in a virtual world while they perform experiments on me?

Oooh, I hope that the next experiment involves measuring my response to drinking alcohol with lots of beautiful people in Talacker.

Re: Nationwide Siren Test, TuWednesday 6th February

The local kids seemed to be enjoying it. They were all gathered round the Gemeindehaus where the sirens are with fingers in their ears.

Re: Nationwide Siren Test, TuWednesday 6th February

That was disappointing. There were a few sirens outside and they were rather faint, but here in my building there was nothin-

-Arrgh! What the hell is that noise?!?!?

Just kidding. Not a cracker.

Dunno if this was posted already but it clarifies what the sounds mean. My work buddies have been discussing it.
