Dunno if this was posted already but it clarifies what the sounds mean. My work buddies have been discussing it.

I was just about to ask.

Re: Nationwide Siren Test, TuWednesday 6th February

That's what it was??!!

The siren was deafeningly loud near where I was. I didn't know what it was at first, but I saw people going about their daily business as usual, so I figured the siren wasn't anything serious.

It's a rather spooky sound, isn't it? It's sort of the type of music you imagine hearing to signal the end of the world ...

There's definitely a very eerie quality to the tone. I've heard a few sirens before at airfields when there's been a stack, but nothing as unnerving as the ones here.

There'll be a nationwide test of the alarm sirens on Wednesday 6th February at 13.30.

It can be loud so don't worry, the Martians / Lichtensteiners / Scientologists aren't landing. (The Germans are already here )

More info here (in English)

Thanks UM, just saw this post now...

Nobody in our office knew what was going on...we spent a few cheerful minutes deciding if the end of the world was nigh....and then went back to work...

Re: Nationwide Siren Test, Wednesday 6th February

Couldn't hear it in the restaurant where I was having lunch. This kinda defeats the purpose of what is a good idea.

Ahh, it was the thing that woke me up so I could get on with writing my thesis every Monday morning...
Dad was fitting some petrol pumps at a garage in Crowthorne in the 80s when the usual 10.00 am siren went off. It wasn't until people noticed that it was still going an hour later that they realised someone had got out.
The school's 'plan' for an escape was just to send us home early, neglecting to think of those of us who walked to and from school each day...
I grew up near Broadmoor too... my school gave the choice to my mum that I either walked home or was shut in school if the alarm went off.

Must admit I was therefore disappointed by the volume of the alarm here!

Although I was near the border with France... perhaps the Swiss want to ensure they get a competitive advantage and ensure the French cannot hear it? I guess in the event of nuclear war it's survival of the fittest!

So what did she choose? Longer period of peace and quiet whilst you were kept in "prison" or "let him face the odds with the crazies"??
