No skiing for you, Kim Jong-un.

Switzerland has blocked a deal to sell ski lifts to North Korea in the latest setback for leader Kim Jong-un's pet ski resort project.

The Swiss government cited expanded sanctions on luxury exports to North Korea.

Re: No skiing for you, Kim Jong-un.

It is such a pity. His father was a great sportsman and I wonder what he would have done on the ski piste.

Quite a bit judging by this photo:

At least it's not photo-shopped like all the other similar photos.

According to the article, the army has been ordered to finish the resort by year end. At least they're doing something constructive. Now if they would just grow some food and build a school or two...

Re: No skiing for you, Kim Jong-un.

Didn't Kim Jong-un (Or was it only Kim Jong-chul ) go to the private school at Bern, near Gümligen station? I expect he went skiing many times with his body guard, and now he misses it all. As you say D-R, he should feed his people first.

Re: No skiing for you, Kim Jong-un.

I am no fan of North Korea, but why is Switzerland blocking the sale of ski lifts to that country? They are not part of NATO, and they aren't part of the EU. Furthermore, this isn't anything like enriched uranium---it's ski lifts. Does anybody know when Switzerland passed this law banning the sale of luxury items to NK?

No, Switzerland isn't. What have NATO and the EU got to do with it though?

In answer to your other question, the UN embargo on exporting "luxury goods" to North Korea has been in place since 2006, and since then Swiss authorities have maintained a periodically updated list of exactly what is and isn't considered a "luxury good".

The last update, and the one which confirmed that this sale would definitely be blocked, was quite recent, July 5 of this year.

Having said that, the firm supplying the lifts had been in touch with the Swiss government about it already, were warned it would be a problem and went ahead with the order anyway. Their choice, I guess.

The company is located in Flums. I wonder if Grumpy has anything to do with this...

The plot thickens.

The reason I mentioned NATO and the EU was that I could see both of those groups organising their members into a boycott of North Korea. I didn't think about the United Nations, possibly because my country is famous for flaunting that organisation whenever they do something that the U.S. doesn't like. Thanks for answering my question.

North Korea's Skiers' Association (open to all, obviously) is upset.

Well, it's the same thing with Cuba, Iran or any other country which US doesn't like. They aim to destroy economy of those countries. And to do so they press their European allies to not have any trade with them/block their bank accounts etc.

He probably withdrew "his" millions from his Swiss Bank Account... and of course that cannot go unpunished!

Will on the other hand Cuba be allowed to buy ski lifts from Switzerland? I have always wanted to ski in Cuba.

Re: No skiing for you, Kim Jong-un.

The Chinese re-classified ski lifts as items of pleasure for the working classes, rather than luxury goods, and Kim Jong-un got his lift.

Now the UN sanction committee has frowned upon the export of Swiss watches, and Kim won't be getting anymore.
