Groupe pour une Suisse sans Armée = GSsA in French.

And don't you lot use the translation feature of your browser? I do all the time.

GSOA GSSA GSWA ..... whatever, I expect English speakers living in Switzerland and using a forum with the ending .ch to know the more important abbreviations in use in this country.

Well, more fuel to the GSOA, I'd say ... cue question, "What does that stand for?", and more than a week's worth of discussion ...

I wonder what effect this will have on the expected referendum on the purchase of the Saab fighter aircraft.

Re: F/A-18 has crashed in Obwalden

It's a tragedy

SF1 has briefly talked about it at the beginning of the Tagesschau. According to DDPS (VBS), the F/A-18 has disappeared in the Susten area. I just hope that the pilot is safe and sound!

Ok, let's talk turkey here. What is it lately, that people cannot locate an airplane anymore? It just baffles me, that as soon as we cross the border into Germany, we receive a text informing us that roaming tariffs may apply...we are able to locate a missing phone with the help of an app, but we are not able to locate a missing airplane with a predetermined flying path??
Can somebody please shed some light into the matter?

Maybe you just answered your own question: the flight deck just need to keep their mobiles switched on and everyone knows where they are (plus they might find a Pokéstop at 35,000 feet).

Would they need to keep their phones in flight mode?

I suspect that they know pretty much where the aircraft went off the screen, and can calculate where the impact is. Getting to that area when the weather precludes the use of aircraft is a different matter.

That the press release last night didn't mention much detail is not a good sign. That there was no mention of flight data or communications indicating that the pilot initiated an ejection seat event, or announced any technical problems makes me think that this will not have a happy ending.

Multiple reasons:

Military aircrafts are not made to be easily found. The fact that the swiss air force loves to make some low passages between the mountains and the fact that it has a camouflaged texture make's it extreamly hard to find.

During this low passages, radar contact is lost and no crash is assumed unless it doesn't appear back in the radar after a given time.

Same principle goes on the Air France Flight 447 crash. While contact is lost during "blind spots/gaps" accross the atlantic, the search area is much much higher because there is no certain "last location" therefore thakes much longer to find the aircraft.

Hope he's OK.

Anyone know if ejection seat has a unique ELT signal, or is it 121.5/406Mhz.

The main one, yes. The one with all the hands and cashmere jumpers knotted at the throat, not so much.
