Want to own a gun in Switzerland? Not if you're from one of these countries!

So the Tribunal Fédéral ruled today that a Turkish man couldn't own a gun because of his nationality. Apparently there's a dozen countries on the list of citizens not allowed ownership because of the risk of importing conflict into Switzerland from their homelands. Not a bad judgement don't you think?

its not only guns, friend of SWMBO is not allowed to own a bow in CH though she represents her home country on an international competition level.

She practices and stores her equipment outside of CH.

Same goes for the british pistol Olympic team.. to practise they have to go to france or Belgium, pistols not allowed in Britain

Re: Want to own a gun in Switzerland? Not if you're from one of these countries!

Why does my country need to be first on the list, i demand the list to be ordered alphabetically!

But jokes aside, totally reasonable.
I first wouldn't allow guns for BalkanERS, especially our diaspora.

Yup it is and it doesn't put these countries in the best possible light [which is shame]….buuut i do see the logic behind it, at least in these particular cases.

SO the citizens of the country with the highest gun violence (us) are allowed to carry guns here. The swiss are also allowing german nationals resident in the country to be armed? Hmmm....

It's about the possibility/frequency of violent acts commited in Switzerland by a certain demography of the population.

And? Not all Turks with a gun will shoot someone. Being penalized based on your country of origin is as bad as being penalized based on your skin color or religion, etc..

Re: Want to own a gun in Switzerland? Not if you're from one of these countries!

I wonder how the law applies to secundos like Kubi Türkyilmaz and Hakan Yakin...

These Turks are good enough for the Swiss football team but can they be trusted with a gun?

If the answer is yes then the new gun law isn't racist.

Re: Want to own a gun in Switzerland? Not if you're from one of these countries!

I don't have a problem with the law and I don't think it's racist. I don't think anyone is saying a Turkish person is more violent than a Swiss or America or more likely to commit a crime with a gun. If they were, that'd be out of order and certainly racist. What the legislators are saying is that there are global systemic problems with certain nationalities/ethnicities and that some members of these nationalities/ethnicities are likely to take advantage of the ability to own a gun to continue and escalate their existing conflicts. This is much the same way ancient Italian conflicts were continued and escalated by Italian immigrants in America. The causes of this were the increase in money circulating around them, ability to own a gun (still, as in Italy) and the lack of knowledge of the authorities regarding the intricacies of their conflict and therefore how to combat it. The first and third are hard to prevent but removing the guns is easier.

Definitely an oversight, we need to add more countries to that list as soon as possible, in fact why not add all!

I inherited from my grandfather and old first world war gun who has been passed from grandfathers to grandons in my family for years, and I'm having a lot of trouble with it, trying to take it to Switzerland (from Argentina). It's not the same case, but it seems like they don't want non swiss people to have any kind of guns here...
