Zürich - Swiss champions in cocaine use

According to this report from 20 Minuten, Zürich's population is using 1.6Kg of cocaine every day. Extrapolating figures from data measuring waste water over a period of a week, the figure puts Zürich as #1 city for cocaine use in Switzerland and number 3 in Europe behind Amsterdam and Antwerp.

In light of this announcement and Zürich's traditional city links with Kunming, China and San Francisco, may it not be a valid idea to also hook up with Medellín. Colombia?

Anyone out there like to confirm these figures? I'll go first; I've never touched the stuff in my life.

Re: Zürich - Swiss champions in cocaine use

How much would that be in Swiss Francs, as a street value? Such a sad waste of money. The article also says the amount consumed in Zurich this year, has gone up a lot.

Re: Zürich - Swiss champions in cocaine use

According to an NZZ report from 2008, the price dropped from CHF 600 per gram in the 80s to anything between CHF 40 to 120 per gram at that time depending on the purity. Guess you don't know what you're getting until it has / doesn't have the desired effect.

I'm not surprised, Zurich is the swiss city most similar to Milan, the city where is consumed more cocaine in Italy.
I think it's due to the amount of managers, rich people, etc. ...

I think street price is the wrong calculation as I am sure the local dealer keeps his cut which is probably very valuable for the local economy... but anyway, let's just assume the average of Assassins quote with 80 CHFs per gramm.

That makes 80*1600*365 = 46.7 M CHF. Or in other words: about 0.3 Gripen jets... or about the salary of Fernando Alonso.

I'm also not surprised...

I think a lot of people in Zurich are really stressed out. And many also earn enough to support their habit. It reminds me of an anti-drug commercial in the US a few years ago, that shows a guy walking in circles inside a public restroom saying over and over to himself:

"I do coke, so I can work longer, so I can earn more, so I can do more coke..."

Nasty stuff. I've never touched it myself (thankfully!), but I've been at parties where people were doing it, and all I could think was: "You really don't look like you're having a good time" (the creepy jaw grinding thing, etc.). Yuck.

Hmm.. I think it might be more boredom. Escapism. Addictions are by nature more selfish, than a desperate coping mechanism from having too much to do.

Re: Zürich - Swiss champions in cocaine use

We have become a world where we need cocaine to turn on and alcohol to turn off.

I have have worked with addictions mostly alcohol. Insidious.

I help people to turn off and turn on naturally. We can learn how to change our states of mind with out the need for drugs or alcohol.

Unfortunately there is so much pressure to be successful that people resort to these unnatural enhancments. They strive for success usually ending up loosing more.

These things can become obstacles to success

Yeah, perhaps. I always thought cocaine was a "party drug," so a lot of people in Zurich probably do use it just as a means to ease boredom. I think a lot of people also use it because they feel it makes socializing (e.g. in clubs) easier for them. From what I've seen, it really inflates people's egos.

Who knows...

It's better to pamper oneself with culture. Cerebral stuff. Sports. Sex...but these things require effort. And, most of all, they do not sell. They should earn more street cred than drugs.

An addiction becomes selfish. To satisfy the bodies need for the substance becomes the priority.

Yes, no doubt it can be escapism for some. To escape or turn off from the pressures and stress of daily life.

For some it can be a self esteem booster.

For many in the financial world it is an enhancer.

I think the average banker in Zurich does not need cocaine in order to have an inflated ego. The drug makes them lose their inhibitions to talk to people and tell them how awesome they always thought they are...

For some the alcohol has a relaxing effect, Calmer. Not so stressed.

Cocaine is the energizer

He uses alcohol to loose the inhibitions,.

He uses alcohol to be able to sustain and compete.

Alcohol and drug addiction is a major problem in society. It ruins lives, people loose jobs, families , homes relationships etc.

BUT that being said many people are recognizing this and getting involved in other activities such as yoga, exercise, meditation etc Cool

There are those who are recognizing the dangers and are quitting before they hit bottom.

One thing to remember that addiction is not only relegated to the poor.

There are treatment centers in zurich making thousands servicing the wealthy, including politicians, royals, athletes, musicians.

Drugs have been around since the first caveman licked some funny looking mushroom... we grow grapes to produce alcohol for thousands of years and other plants have an equally long history.

If all numbers are right is the consumption (in Europe) today LOWER than it was in the generations before - that's the reason why the prices have eroded so badly since they 1980s. Any idea what a shithole some parts of especially Zurich were in the 90s?

A more detailed analysis would probably find that most of it originates from waste water from the buildings in the Paradeplatz area...
