Reading this thread makes me realize...no wonder so many newbies think we are a bunch of weirdos.

Don't worry, they also think that of the Swiss as well
I can assure you that living here for past 7 years, I haven't intentionally tasted neither cat nor dog meat, that I would know of (my clean conscience) ... If it were minced with other culinary products or labeled by something else, that'd be whole different story

Re: Do Swiss people eat cats and dogs ?

When my dad was little, during the first world war and food shortages, it was very common. He never forgave his dad for his beloved St Bernard ending in the pot in early 1918. When I was a kid in the 50s- it was only the Italian immigrants that ate cats. Nowadays, even here in rural Jura- I don't know anyone who still eats cats or dogs. I'd say that it may be more prevalent in a few very limited areas, and VERY rare now, but yes, it does happen.

Re: Do Swiss people eat cats and dogs ?

I don't know what the issue it really...if you can eat a chicken or a kebab why is eating a dog any different? Because you don't have those animals in your home?

I personally would never eat a dog, but, I am trying to not eat any animals at all...which is a trick in todays world.

I've asked my Swiss friend if it's true and she was convinced I was joking..."cats and dogs???" I felt bad.

Don't feel bad. It happens mostly on the farms, and I guess it is age dependent...I asked many friends this before, and their was response was yes...and did you also know you can have sex with your first cousin here?

No Swiss cousins so this info is irrelevant...

Just wondering what's the relation between eating cats and dogs with having sex with first cousin?

Primarily, one of the reasons would be that my cousin from the States adores and owns cats. Therefore she would be angry with me and never buy me an American marshmallow anymore. And that would have been such a great loss, you know!

Secondly, I cannot stop eating meat because most of my body structure consists of pure healthy muscles which were gained in long process of consuming poultry and fowl. If I stopped now I would have probably gotten more goose-bumps

Thirdly, the dogs are out of question because they are being part of the household as domestic animals and very good buddies. Who would wanna devour one's best friend afterall?

You're not allowed to sell cat and dog meat. But you can butcher them yourself for you own consummation
Goodness, that just brings all sorts of pictures to my mind...consummating with butchered cats and dogs
Ok, sounds weird, but "consommation" is French for consumption -- a forgivable mistake. Provided you speak French as well as Mélusine speaks English, you may cast the second stone.

Simple: being stuck in valleys during long winters.

Well marshmallows are your loss. You can buy them at Coop you know?
Protein can be gained without eating meat, but choose to believe what you want.
Again, they are in your household as a choice. Some religions think of them in the same line as pigs. Although they do not consume pigs. Yes, I like my dog when I had her. And probably would rather starve to death before eating her. However, I think it is hypocritical to say that eating one life form over another is better. Except convicted pedophiles, I would think that might be just fine.

I do not fully agree. When I made friends with a dog he barked at me and wiggled his tail. Then allowed me to cuddle him.

Last time I spoke to the tank fish, she bubbled something and turned upside down. Never heard a grunt from her ever since. She was just as good as the fillet afterwards.

All animals do that...but you eat them anyways...a dog is something special to you. A cow does the same, a horse, a duck can...

Humans for the most of history have lived off of a plant based diet. ...
Twaddle. Fact is no-one knows for sure what humans have mainly eaten through-out human history. Some experts insist it was mainly plant, other insist on the image of early man as the mighty hunter. Certainly, when they could get hold of meat they did. It's one theory behind the demise of woolly mammoths and other mega-fauna.

Pork isn't toxic. I think this kind of idiotic myth - spread by Mercola and others, who make money out of "natural" products, comes about by the fact that the US meat industry (and others) produces food in what seems to be an extremely unhealthy way.

The idea that we weren't evolved to eat meat is horse feathers, based on ignorance on what evolution means. Humans are still evolving - demonstrated by the fact that I can digest cows milk.

But hey, you keep cherry-picking the data you like, and form your food myths accordingly.

Food myths. You can look at history, and evolution. Protein results in height. The cast part of human history, and their buildings prove, that humans have been very short for awhile. In recent times the Japanese have shot up in growth because of more meat based protein in their lives and this is a fact. I don't have books in front of me, but it is the truth.

Not cherry picking, but, stating what I know.
