The ritual of new year's Federal Council photo

It's a very swiss tradition. The new president of the Federal Council decides on the composition and scenery of the photo. Everyone then tries to decode the message carried through the picture.

So what do you see?

What I see is
> a nice picture
> Didier Burkhalter talking pleasantly with Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf
> Ueli Maurer (Defence Minister of the best army in the world) with Doris Leuthard (the human face of the CVP)
> Alain Berset talking pleasantly with the office chancellor Corina Cosanova (daughter of a previous chancellor)
> Simonetta Sommaruga (president / SP) in a friendly talk with the Vice President (FDP) Johann Schneider-Ammann

As the Tagesanzeiger puts it: as if the photo had been shot by da Vinci. Or Dan Brown. Decoding a message is therefore a pertinent question.

Re: The ritual of new year's Federal Council photo

- Corina Casanova: 3 fingers appearing between the table and her thigh. Like showing her membership to a secret society

-Berset's right hand in the position of giving the oath

- Doris...her jacket has been photoshoped (look and zoom on right shoulder)

- Ueli Maurer the only one with a distinctive swiss pin on his jacket. The only visible notepad on table and is between him and Doris Leuthard.

- Sommaruga's right hand looks like about to grab that only fruit out of the basket: an apple. Some temptations?

- A very old bakelite phone behind Burkhalter....expecting a call from the past?

- Widmer'Schlumpf: left hand positioned like a fist on the table. Banging her fist on the table? What does she want....why is she (internally) angry?

-Outside the window, everything is calm no storm but it's fall. The end of harvesting and prepare for the tough winter times ahead of us?

> Berset is a former Pianist who worked in Brazil and so is used to make theatralic gestures
> Mrs Sommaruga clearly waited for the end of the photo session to get some fruit
> Didier Burkhalter is mentally based in the 1950ies and 60ies
> Mrs Widmer-Schlumpf just as her father who also sat in the Bundesrat has it with US president Teddy Roosevelt speak softly and always carry a big stick

I can, at least the members of the Bundesrat, I however had forgotten the name of the Kanzler

Me too. I've been helping my son revise for a test next week and am pleased that both of us could name them all. Hope he can still remember them on Tuesday.
Before the holidays the only one we knew was Burkhalter and that's only because he visited the school last year.

in schooltime, we feared the moment when we in tests had to name all SEVEN MEN. Not only were they utterly boring but never got into the public and so could not be seen in the newspaper (no TV then, only Radio). So that we all got the Pestalozzi Kalender where all seven men were pictured on page 3

Isn't it rather... odd... that Sommaruga and Schneider-Ammann are so prominently placed in the forefront, looking at the camera, while the other Bundesrat members seem to be relegated to the background?

Micheline Calmy-Rey was recently/is pictured in Tages Anzeiger (web page) with an uncanny smiley expression. At dirst I thought it was some kind of a Photoshop joke.

I would have chosen something more exciting than reenacting the last supper. How about "Laocoon and his sons"? I know that does not have enough people, but Maurer could be the snake...

It is one of the best pics of the Bundesrat ever, in a realistic setting. Ogi had them as a group of Après-Skiers and Couchepin as a group of hikers which looked artificial

Tend to agree. Worth looking at the archive photos...some are really weird. There is one exception in 2008 with a photo of a federal council surrounded by a crowd.

Re: The ritual of new year's Federal Council photo

Like very year, here is the new picture of the federal council for 2016.
This time the picture was taken outside an office or room. Schneider-Amman and Doris Leuthard are in the foreground and looking straight ahead while the other members are smiling (except Berset) and looking at them. What is noticeable are the 6 workers in the background busy on a production line of a blue rotary press. It's very seldom that other people get pictured on this traditional photo.
The setup in a printing business is probably Amman's priority for the year: protecting swiss businesses, jobs and production.
