EasyJet Gatwick to Basel turned back today

An EasyJet plane heading for Basel this afternoon had to turn back to Gatwick due to technical problems. It landed safely

I don't care how negligible the chances are of dying in a plane accident, stories like this give me the heebyjeebies...

I flew BA from Heathrow to Madrid about 20 years ago. After taxiing for a while we returned to the terminal and the captain announced there would be a short delay as a warning light had come on and engineers would be with us shortly to check the problem.

After an hours delay with engineers crawling under the plane we started taxiing again. The captain then announced that the engineers hadn't found any problem and that they "thought it must just be a faulty warning light".

I've never in my life been on such a quiet flight as that one.

Re: EasyJet Gatwick to Basel turned back today

This would be a much bigger barf ride.

Seriously though, 20 years ago, we took off from Schipol for the first leg of our honeymoon, and suddenly the flight attendants were rushing back and forth in the cabin. There was smoke somewhere in the cabin and they turned around, we landed, deplaned and later took another plane. I'm not always a calm flyer, but this was handled efficiently and calmly. It was not so bad.

Madrid usually has that effect.

Yikes! How long was the flight? I'm sure people were glad to get off safely.

Re: EasyJet Gatwick to Basel turned back today

Many years ago I was leaving Vancouver with wife and son. My son asked "you do a lot of flying have you any tips?
Since I am a complete a##e I said when the takeoff starts count up to twenty; if we are still on the ground we have a problem!
So we start the takeoff and a little voice says "Dad I am on twentytwo"!
Then the emergency brakes came on....

We taxied to a quiet corner and the pilot revved the engines a few times and announced "Seems OK, let us try agIn"

That was also a quiet flight. 😯

Re: EasyJet Gatwick to Basel turned back today

A friend from our Basel days who lived in Kenya for many years was on a business trip to some remote part of East Africa. The plane landed at an airstrip and the passengers disembarked to the lounge area.

The pilot came to the passengers and asked if anyone has a screwdriver. My friend obliged with a Swiss Army penknife. The pilot opened a hatch on one of the engines, made an adjustment with the penknife and the passengers were shepherded back onto the plane and they carried on their merry way.

Cheers,
Nick

Re: EasyJet Gatwick to Basel turned back today

Looking forward to next week .... GVA to LGW with EJ.

Hopefully will be flying on one of the safest planes in the air following fleet safety checks.

Probably still best not to share this story with the rest of my party.

Re: EasyJet Gatwick to Basel turned back today

Flying Gatwick to Greece once, oh more than 20 years ago. We were somewhere over France when the sun was on the wrong side of the plane. Pilot announced there was a warning light and we had to return to our destination and everyone should keep our seatbelts on. Then turbulence. Then they served oupr in-flight meal. Not a lot got eaten I can tell you that.

Great thing about all these stories is that they are all being told. Just shows you how airline safety is really good.

Re: EasyJet Gatwick to Basel turned back today

A lot of faults are simply cleared by resetting the system . Power off power on.. all good.

Re: EasyJet Gatwick to Basel turned back today

Depends on the system.... the aircraft tells the driver what to do anyway if they have a warning.

Re: EasyJet Gatwick to Basel turned back today

In the bad old days of Dan-Air, a distant relative of mine was flying a charter flight from Gatwick to Turkey. There was a short cut through the DDR airspace, but which needed prior permission to use.

The following was the pure Biggles style of flying.

Second officer: "erm captain, there's a Mig on my side & he's waving at me."
Captain : "yep there's one this side waving too. I think he wants us to follow him down."

The Dan-Air office had neglected to receive permission to overfly the DDR!

They landed, gave the Turkish workers a meal on board, and suffered some gentle interrogation from the local Stasi.
Second officer said, "They were getting a bit nasty, and then I passed the Polo mints around and they became a bit more relaxed"

His mother was furious, "Last week you had a fire in the cockpit, don't lie to me, I read it in the DM. And now this happens!"

Biggles: "Yes, well, that was all last week Mum."
