Re: So what is it with the Burka?

the tradition of the Burka and wearing of it goes back hundreds of years. Its rooted into ther religion. One could hardly compare it to the westerner who cannot wear his short pants in Saudi Arabia.

It just shows no mutual respect .. If i was a woman and went to Saudi (for example) and decided that it's my human right or my religion to walk around in whatever attire suits me, i'd very quickly be arrested or worse..And i just mean bare arms or no head covering.. However when people come to "the west" well we just have to accept it or be branded as racists.

The outfit itself doesn't offend me but the lack of mutual respect does..

And as politically incorrect as it is, i find it highly amusing to see the ladies (edit -- if they are ladies under there) getting their photo taken by the jet d'eau covered from head to toe.. How do they even know who's who when they check the photos later. Maybe they tell themselves apart by the louis viton handbags and chanel sunglasses.

But it's rooted in my religion to wear what i like.. short pants included.. So why can't I go do that? It's also rooted in my religion to drink wine, why can't I go do that either?

Because Saudi Arabia is a nasty, illiberal shithole and Switzerland isn't?

Re: So what is it with the Burka?

Wearing what I want has got nothing to do with religion

Just on a lighter note watch the eyes on the man reading the paper.

Respect as in that is the usual attire or customs there. I don't tell other people how to live their lives. If you have been to one of those countries you will also learn it is for your own protection as the men are rather free with what they grope. I respected their cover up rules & still got treated in a way which means I will never visit that country again.

Accept the fact that Switzerland is a more liberal and generally nicer country than Saudi Arabia?

Sure, why not?

No, it is not rooted in Islam and the religion in no way tells women to cover their face. (It does tell them to dress decently which i fully agree to... I am sure Mohammed would have banned leggins.)

It is rooted in the cultural habits of rural Afghanistan. Cause one tribe might steal the others women if they could only get a look at them...

In the 70s did some country bumpkins still do it while Kabul looked more like Istanbul. Since then did some backward idiots get into power and force their values on their own people. But we have to respect this cause we are tolerant...

Re: So what is it with the Burka?

So what is it with Burka?

There is nothing wrong with Burka exquisitely if it is used governed by policy xxxyyyzzz and under the following conditions:

- it's used to cover face during religious ceremonies,
- it's cold below -10deg Centigrade and conditions dictate otherwise,
- baldness may cause premature skull freezing in Andermatt region,
- festive seasons and carnivals, Oktoberfest excluded

Exempted are those who wear hats and sunglasses like Mr Simpson

They ( the SVP ) are trying again to get the Burka in the " forbidden" list.
It seems the SVP is split on this one. While it was sponsored by an SVP member, it does not have everybody's support. I think this is a lame and failed attempt to make a social statement, and Swiss democratic initiatives are not the proper platform for such statements. They should try a soapbox or performance art instead.

It doen't really make sense. The author mentions issues of "freedom" and "repressions", yet the initiative curtails freedom, and is repressive. I mean, what next? Ban BDSM fetish wear?

The only exception I can think of for this would be for personal identification for security reasons at certain places. I'm not sure biometric face-recognition surveillance systems can identify a person under a burka. It may require a special heat imaging camera to do that.

but forbidding it here will not change anything-its just another excuse to throw something more at the the Muslim's
Yeah, it's silly to forbid it... but even muslim countries do not permit people to wear burkas in banks and other security sensitive areas.

I remember entering an airport in Iran, and having the women remove the mask (the hard masks worn in Kish) to identify themselves as women to the male guards at the entrance.

I have been to one of those countries, since I was born in one. It is certainly not my culture. Maybe women like Linea UZH would disagree, but my family does not. Many groups live in Iran and most women take that hijab off the second they no longer need to wear it.

The only time I've been groped by a strange man was crossing a busy road in Iran while wearing a Manteau and Hijab. My uncle was walking with me, and this strange man just grabbed my ass and breasts. I just laughed in his face because it was so pathetic. Of course, I've also been in a sauna, in the nude in Switzerland, and I didn't even get a side-long glance. Which culture is worse for women?

I think Switzerland should introduce a law that attractive birds have to go around town with their baps out. This would take all this focus on Burkhas away and would demonstrate the true liberal values that makes this country great.

I don't think people get that the burka has nothing to do with beauty. It has to do with fetishising and reducing women into nothing more than sexual object.

I know exactly what it's about. I Feel sometimes I am also being objectified by the way women are looking at me. What are my options ?

For me it's the fact that you go to a country where it's the norm you respect their culture & cover up, so when they come here they should respect the local culture or not come here (for tourists). I have seen a few walking around Geneva but not many. I actually appreciate the multi cultural feel here but I do draw the line at full cover ups.
I fully agree with your view - if they want to live in Switzerland, they need to integrate.
