So what is it with the Burka?

They ( the SVP ) are trying again to get the Burka in the " forbidden" list. So what is it that worries them about it. Looks like a paranoia to me. I mean how often do you see someone wearing it and they are usually tourists. And to forbid it changes nothing-at least not in the arabian world.

Its just another anti Islam movement by a bunch of paranoid Swiss.Simply to win a few more votes for these senile bastards.

I find the Burka something mysterious. And why to forbid it. It represents another culture and beliefs which we are never going to change anyhow or even should try.

Re: So what is it with the Burka?

For me it's the fact that you go to a country where it's the norm you respect their culture & cover up, so when they come here they should respect the local culture or not come here (for tourists). I have seen a few walking around Geneva but not many. I actually appreciate the multi cultural feel here but I do draw the line at full cover ups.

It represents not the Islam but a very specific interpretation of it. One that is very incompatible with Swiss or European values. The SVP can hardly fear monger by using cosmopolitan Turkish bikini models... it takes a strong symbol extremism and long beards don't work as symbol for Islamists if your audience is in Appenzell

well in places like Saudi Arabia its the sight of naked skin that offends them.So what is it that the Burka offends. Not enough naked skin?

Women don't cover up when visiting saudi arabia and iran due to "respect" since the women there want the women there to have the option to not wear it. Women wear it because they know not wearing it can lead to arrest, beatings, rape, etc...

FTFY

Why is it only Muslim women that 'have' to cover up?

The psychology behind this has been discussed in-depth in other threads, namely in this one with over 700 posts 22nd September 2013: Ticino and the Burka ban vote

Re: So what is it with the Burka?

to be fair, most Muslim women do not 'have to' only a very limited group from certain regions and 'brand' of Islam.

Perhaps Switzerland should go for a middle of the road way, allow a scarf or nicab that covers the head but allow the eyes to be free?

No women should have to!

Men don't so why should women? Because of religion or because men tell them to?

Re: So what is it with the Burka?

Agreed there- I had students in the UK who had to- and leave school at 15 despite really wanted to continue studying, because they belonged to an extreme Christian brethren. I have friends who wer forced to become Catholic Priests (they DIDNT' - but it cost them dearly) and one a nun- she did and nearly lost her life to depression. Leaving was also hugely difficult- etc.

The Burka has little to do with Islam, and clearly NOT required in the Koran- but all to do with a very specific brand of extreme Islam and cultural background.

Our Muslim relatives live in parts of the world where girls and women do not wear specific head-dress or clothes, etc. Our oldest cousin did the Hadj 2 years ago with her mum, and has decided to wear a piil box- but entirely her choice. They are all highly educated and free, despite being very religious and family oriented, and totally accept us as 'apostates'.

The wahabi dress that leaves a slit for the eyes is in what way "middle of the road" exactly?

I don't suppose all us kafirs could mind our own bloody business?

This business of telling other people what they should and shouldn't do is getting a bit tiresome.

Re: So what is it with the Burka?

It just shows no mutual respect .. If i was a woman and went to Saudi (for example) and decided that it's my human right or my religion to walk around in whatever attire suits me, i'd very quickly be arrested or worse..And i just mean bare arms or no head covering.. However when people come to "the west" well we just have to accept it or be branded as racists.

The outfit itself doesn't offend me but the lack of mutual respect does..

And as politically incorrect as it is, i find it highly amusing to see the ladies (edit -- if they are ladies under there) getting their photo taken by the jet d'eau covered from head to toe.. How do they even know who's who when they check the photos later. Maybe they tell themselves apart by the louis viton handbags and chanel sunglasses.
