And they're not doing that already with Greece?
Unfortunately no.
They 're demanding things in return for their financial help.
Greece is forced to sell itself to EU in exchange for their help.

That's a little disingenuous as it makes it sound that they're demanding something like Crete in return for the money.

In reality the EU is getting no 'things' in return. What is happening is that the EU is demanding that Greece gets its spending under control, because without that it will simply become a bottomless pit with, or without, EU money - after all, were you to financially bail out a friend who's a shopaholic, I suspect you might want them to cut up their credit cards first.

Do they? Why do you think does Greece want to stay in the EU despite all the hardship?

Greece receives €6-8bln net each year as EU member. That's around 5% of greece GDP or about €7k for each resident.

There are several major problems with the EU. One is that individual countries do not have separate monetary controls, all countries must follow the EU bank in Frankfurt. As higher inflation is not permitted, the monetary pressure results in higher unemployment.
Yet, somehow, do the US states seem to cope with a very similar situation without people worrying too much about it...

Total nonsense! Greece could walk a way anytime it pleases, but the reality is that they want it both ways. And that is not going to fly anymore.

I've often asked myself the same question, and not really found a satisfactory answer. The USA also has a huge disparity between the richest and poorest states, and a lot of money flows from the rich to the poor states. We've heard of cities going bankrupt, but I've yet to hear of any state coming anywhere near that.

Maybe somebody with more understanding can enlighten me?

This is because the USA is a full federation. The EU is not.

The EU is ultimately still a collection of separate sovereign nations. Some aspects of the union are quite federal, but in the end the buck stops with all member states, unlike countries like the USA or Switzerland that are joined together as a federation and have lost almost all of their individual sovereignty.

This is often a criticism of the Euro; that it is ultimately only as strong as its weakest link and there are no 'Eurobonds' underpinning the currency. This is, despite the eurosceptic conspiracy theorists claims, because few if any of the member states are seriously interested in losing their sovereignty in a federation - France or Germany are no more interested in becoming mere regions in the Grosser Europäische Reich, than the UK is.
